The weather sucked, but the record fell anyway

A steady drizzle and mid-50 degree temperatures greeted riders as they signed in for the North Atlantic Regional Time Trial championship on June 15. But over 200 hardy riders showed, and a few of them had Doug Day's 15-year-old course record in their sights. Forty rather hilly kilometers of wet, winding New England two lane awaited.
In the end, five riders would eclipse Day's mark of 53:28 for 40-km - Michael Dietrich (53:27, NECSA), Matt Svatek (52:52, Wheelworks/Cannondale), Robert Coapman (52:43, Aurora Cycles), and Curt Davis (52:32, Wheelworks/Cannondale). Fastest on the day was Bill Innes (Kissena), who trimmed over a minute off the record with a 52:27. A remarkable performance, for which he was awarded a Festina wristwatch, the only one of its kind in the US, and a $100 bonus.
Festina watches were also awarded to the Espoir (age 19-22) division, Ari de Wilde (NECSA), and the women's division, Anna Milkowski (Gearworks/SRP). Milkowski scorched the course in 58:40, putting almost four minutes on her closest competitor. This may be close to the women's record, set by world TTT champ Jan Bolland in 1990, but old results have not been found to verify the time.
Crappy weather and fast times were the day's themes, as the drizzle and mist held on, the temperature never warmed, and riders in almost every category broke the magic hour mark. Besides the two riders in Masters 55 group who bested an hour, there were standouts in the women as well - Jennifer Calder (Masters 55) and Stephanie White (Junior 13-14) elected to ride the full 40-km although their official distances were half that or less. Helene Hines hand-cranked her hand cycle, and yes that means using only her arms, 40-km in 1:35:13. Twenty-four of the 202 competitors were Juniors, between 10 and 18 years old.
As expected, the top results were shared among many classes. The top 20 include six masters from four age groups, three Cat. 3's, a Cat. 4, and a Cat. 5 - proving that age and category do not determine your speed on a TT course.
So was it the nice smooth pavement, the "springtime in Belgium" conditions, or the general talent and enthusiasm of the field that made the times so fast? I don't know but I'm going out to measure that course again . . . and start training for when I hit 55.
