Results and Reports for USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Tour of the HilltownsWindsor, MA, July 20, 2002Lavallee, Shimada Win Tour of the HilltownsReport courtesy of Ben Barnhart Good teamwork paid off for both Alex Lavallee (Volkswagen/Trek) and Hiroko Shimada (Verizon/Cervelo) in the Northampton Cycling Club's fifth annual Tour of the Hilltowns last Saturday. Lavallee and teammate Francois Parisien formed a group with five other riders near the crest of East Hawley Road, a winding 9 km climb rising 400 m in altitude which forced a few amateurs to push their bikes up its steepest pitches in the hot July sun. That break stayed away through the rolling western Massachusetts hills, and the young Canadian Lavallee outsprinted Thomas Darby (Wheelworks/Cannondale) for the win while Andrew Randell took third and Parisien grabbed the fourth spot. Local pro Kevin Monahan (7-Up/Nutrafig) took fifth at 12 seconds back, followed by Yasuhiro Yamamoto (Kissena) and Todd Herriott (Think Racing/CRCA). The team from Verizon/Cervelo placed three in a five-rider breakaway that formed midway up the difficult climb during the women's event and Hiroko Shimada (Verizon/Cervelo) rode away from that group on the ascent to the finish to win easily. A minute later her teammate Yvonne Ilton sprinted ahead of Sara Bresnick (Rage/Harpoon/International Bike) for second while Ann Marie Miller (Verizon/Cervelo) took fourth and Katheryn Curi (Dansko/Wheelworks/IF) was fifth.
