Results and Reports for July 6 - 12, 2002USAPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Asheville Training Series #7Asheville, July 9, 2002Women Turn Out Big On The OvalReport by Chris Kamm Although this week did not offer a women's race, the distaff riders took on the guys in such numbers tonight that the series will offer a women's event each race card for the rest of the summer. In the B race this was evident as at least a dozen gals comprised more than a third of the field. Cycles D'Oro riders ruled the oval with Curtis Stapler and Candice Blickem accounting for the first and third places. Nantahala Outdoor Center standout Eric White split those two on points for the second spot. The Masters produced a more familiar result as Joey Coddington (Cane Creek) extended his lead in the season standings with another win. He was aided greatly by the return of teammates Bruce Berry and Kent Williams. Mr. Williams executed his customary long effort off the start and gained 300 meters over twelve laps to not only grab enough points for third place, but also to blunt the efforts of the early sprinters while Coddington got his legs rolling in the opening laps. The 300 meter lead disappeared like smoke when a field prime at lap 15 offered not only points but a mystery 12 pack in a plain brown wrapper (courtesy Cara McCauley). Brian Elliot (DeFeet) won that one by twenty meters and continued to pile up enough points for second when the race ended. The A race also was affected by the entry of several women, including Candice Blickem, Allison Hardy, Jennifer Petosa and Deborah Elliott. The pattern of the race was established early as Darby Harris and Dean Lyons pounded away with counterattacks off points laps and routinely gained 150-200 meters as the field rolled three wide above the stayer's line. Just as routinely, in the absence of any organized response from Cane Creek, Blickem went to the front and muscled down the gap by herself, free of charge. Jacob McGahey and Coddington took advantage of this and their other rivals to finish with only a point separating them. Curtis Stapler finished third in confirmation of his B race win, and only a point here and there decided the descending order of finish in this tightly contested race. Brian Pierce won the Fixed Gear omnium again, although Jeff Franz of Charlotte presented a stiff challenge in his first appearance at the French Broad River Park. While talking between races we compared the various gears employed by different riders in the three events. Franz told me he will bring a few more choices next time with which to contend with Pierce's effortless use of a 94 inch gearing. The surprise of the night was a coup by Jim McMillan in the snowball race that launched him into third in the overall. This is the first time to see his name in lights and he went home with a smile on his face.
