Latham, who along with the other members of the New Zealand Team is preparing for the Junior Worlds at Melbourne, finished fourth in the Prologue Time trial, but only three seconds down on the winner Aaron Strong (Auckland). He won the 70km road stage in a sprint finish to take the yellow jersey. Strong did not finish in the leading bunch and has dropped out of contention. A Hawaiian team is finding the cold conditions not to their liking but one of the riders Teva Crawford is holding seventh place. "He looks like a climber and could really come into it tomorrow" race organiser Ian Dow told Cycling News. Track star Sarah Ulmer is also using the Tour as training and overnight is holding third place in the B grade. The Tour will finish at new Plymouth on Monday.
