Boubnenkova wins with attack after attack

By James Victor, AIS

The first Italian National series race for the A.I.S. Australian team on Sunday was held in pleasant conditions in Cittiglio, a small village in the north-west of Italy near the Swiss border.

After last week's disappointment of a fall in the final 800 metres of the Primavera Rosa World Cup, A.I.S. cyclist Hayley Rutherford continued with good legs and produced her best result in Italy thus far.

Overall the course was not too difficult, until the extension of the circuit for the last three laps had an 800 metre climb of about eight percent grade. The smaller circuit of 6.9km was completed 13 times, with the final three laps extending a further 1.4km onto the harder climb of the day.

The Australians were aggressive throughout the early stages, endeavouring to establish a breakaway, with most of the stronger Italian teams eager to keep the group together.

At three laps to go, and heading over the harder climb for the first time, a lead group of eight formed with A.I.S. rider Hayley Rutherford, and the Edil Savino team having the strongest representation in the group with Svetlana Boubnenkova, Simona Parente and Fabiana Luperini. These three started attacking the lead group immediately as they approached the two laps (18km) to go mark, Rutherford was able to get clear with Boubnenkova who had counter-attacked another Edil Savino move. The gap opened to 40 seconds, with 14km to go, with the main group being driven along by Acca Due O Lorena. Rutherford and Boubnenkova stayed away until 5km to go, when the group of eight was back together, and only 20 secondsback to the main group still chasing hard.

Edil Savino didn't let up, and Boubnenkova was able to get clear again, and solo to the line 14 seconds in front of the small chase group. Rutherford chased former world champion Zinaida Stharurskaia (Chirio Forno d'Asolo) hard to the line for a tight sprint, with Michela Fanini rider Regina Schleicher able to get past both riders on the line for second.
