O'Donnell takes it to the wire

By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent/Evening Herald/Sunday Independent

Irishman Mick O'Donnell, a winner of the Shay Elliott Memorial, scored his first success of the season on Monday in France.

The event was Setef de Paques otherwise known as the Easter Festival Event held in the town of Ploer Dut in Brittany, France.

Held on a 4.5km circuit, which included a gradual climb of 1km for each of the 18 laps. It took only two laps of racing before a group of 12 moved ahead of the large bunch. "I was fortunate that in the 12 man group most of the teams were represented. This allowed us some breathing space, but it was still necessary to put in the effort to stay clear," said Mick.

Included in the group was Welshman Anthony Malarczyk who was prominent in the sprint for the primes. O'Donnell did not fall into the trap of securing any of these primes, because he was intent on winning.

With two laps to go there was an injection of pace which resulted in two of the dozen losing contact.

"I just waited for the sprint and having assessed my companions, I was aware that if I left it until the final meters, I could secure my first win of the season," said Mick.

Playing it right down to the wire, the young Irishman who in the last ten years has always won an open race each season came through to notch his first victory of the year.

The Dublin Skip cyclist has just retuned from Spain after ten weeks of training with his mind set on doing well later this month in the Shay Elliott which has world ranking points and will be promoted by the Bray Wheelers.
