An oldie steals the show in Tour of Southland

A 48 year old veteran stole the show in the individual time trial stage of the PowerNet Tour of Southland this morning. John Alabaster only took up cycling as a sport twelve years ago and today was his proudest moment. "I wish I'd known about cycling when I was 25," he told Cyclingnews.
While the tour's big names regarded the day as a rest day before the longest day tomorrow with an expected showdown between the top teams, Alabaster, a fitness fanatic, scorched over the 15 km course to beat New Zealand Track Squad rider Peter Latham by three seconds with New Zealand Time trial Champion Gordon McCauley third.
