Yates all class in attacking mountain stage

After a day of breakaways and the possibility of a local rider stealing the stage, today's stage of the PowerNet Tour of Southland came down to a showdown between the Tour Leader and his main adversary.

In a wheel to wheel duel over the final three kilometres, race leader Jeremy Yates (Zookeepers) fought off attacks from Scott Guyton (Southland Times) to win by a bike length with young Hot Cycles team member Aaron Strong half a minute behind in third place.

Yates, who also won this stage last year found it a lot different today. "I was a little worried about Scott. He's not a fast rider but he's a really good climber, so I had to be careful about the ride in to the finish. I knew it really well from last year but he was constantly attacking," Yates said.

With three days of the Tour still to go Yates still holds his lead of about 54 seconds intact.

Perhaps the stage today belonged to two young riders. Soon after the half way mark Tim Gudsell (Southland Times) and Matt Randall (Ascot Park Hotel) made a break and were joined by Gordon McCauley, looking after the interests of the Zookeepers team, picking off the King of the Mountains points.

When the bunch caught the trio after 20km McCauley went clear again and surprisingly was joined again by Randall.

The young Southlander Randall is a trackie and rode for New Zealand in the teams pursuit event at the Manchester Commonwealth Games but a virus has kept him off the bike until recently. He dropped McCauley on the start of the final big climb but was swallowed up by the chasers only seven kilometres from the summit. Randall is using the Tour to test his fitness for a return to the track in a few weeks time.

Tomorrow the riders face the traditional moment of truth in the 15km individual time trial stage followed by a road stage from Gore to Invercargill in the afternoon.

Top New Zealand pro rider Julian Dean (Zookeepers) is unconcerned that his form is not his best in this year's Tour of Southland. The CSC rider is moving to Credit Agricole come December and has been careful not to over extend himself.
