Lieswyn and Guyton wrap up Tour of Southland

John Lieswyn (Winton's Middle Pub) battled the odds to win the Tour of Southland which finished at Invercargill today and he also became the first rider from outside Australasia to win in the 46 year history of the event.
The likeable American came into the race last Monday under an injury cloud, the legacy from a mountain bike accident. He won the opening stage, a criterium around the streets of the city but he considered himself "Underdone" and possibly not hardened enough to hold the lead through the week of the Tour.
That might have worked to his advantage. Although he lost the Jersey that same afternoon on the steep climb to the top of Bluff Hill he regained it in the time trial on Thursday and defended it grimly right through to the race finish today.

"I knew I was getting stronger as the race went on though I thought it was gone a couple of times on Friday," Lieswyn said.
On the 154k stage which finished at the Scenic resort town Te Anau his opponents threw everything at him as the riders battled strong crosswinds. An attack by Gordon McCauley and his Zookeepers Café team gave them the stage victory, but the American struggled gamely into town but with his lead of 30 seconds over Kiwi professional Scott Guyton (Southland Times).
On the final stage today, Lieswyn joined a break of seven riders soon after the start and survived several more attacks from Guyton to finish second in the small bunch behind Guyton and confirm his victory.

Lieswyn was full of praise for his Winton Middle Pub teammates, including fellow American Kevin Monahan, Brian Fowler, Hayden Godfrey and Ben Robson. "I just can't say enough about those guys, they were great. They gave it everything to support me," he said.
Guyton had held the Yellow Jersey for a day before losing it to Lieswyn but he gained some consolation when he won the final stage at Invercargill. "If you can't win the Tour, then at least it’s great to get a stage win," he said.
