Vasseur takes toughest stage as Chavanel steps into the lead
The fifth and hardest stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk has been won by Cofidis' Cedric Vasseur, who showed excellent strength on the finishing climb to defeat a small group of favourites. Vasseur, wearing the jersey of the mountains leader, crossed the line 4 seconds in front of Jean-Cyril Robin (FdJ) and 11 seconds ahead of Laurent Brochard (Jean Delatour) and Didier Rous (Bonjour). In sixth place was Sylvain Chavanel (Bonjour) who took over the leader's jersey, as yesterday's leader Raivis Belohvosciks was far behind.
The 184.7 km stage between Outreau and Boulogne-sur-Mer was held in rainy, misty conditions. The stage contained over 20 short steep climbs in the region of Boulogne, and was thus considered the decider. The attacks started almost from the beginning, and it became obvious that the peloton would fragment very quickly. Raivis Belohvosciks tried but failed to cover everything, as his Lampre teammates were not able to afford much support, save for Ludo Dierckxsens. Bonjour kept up the tempo, and at km 114 a small group got away with Chavanel, Le Mevel (Credit Agricole), Sandy Casar (FdJ) and Christophe Agnolutto (Ag2r). They were caught by Jean-Cyril Robin (FdJ), Jens Voigt (Crédit Agricole), Peter Farazijn and Vasseur (Cofidis), Christophe Moreau (Crédit Agricole), Didier Rous (Bonjour) and Laurent Brochard (Delatour).
That became the main break, and it was joined by Allan Johansen (EDS-fakta), Bram Schmitz (BankGiroLoterij) and Michael Barry (US Postal). The latter tried an attack on one of the climbs, but was unable to stay away for long. Vasseur had some bad luck with 8 km to go when he snapped his derailleur. However he quickly changed bikes and regained the front group.
The leading group split into two coming into Boulogne-sur-Mer under the impetus of Rous and Brochard, with Robin, Chavanel, and Farazijn in front and the rest chasing hard. But as they hit the final steep finishing climb, the situation changed with Vasseur launching a strong attack a third of the way up, distancing Robin and the rest to take a very satisfying win.
Belohvosciks lost nearly 13 minutes to finish 41st, well out of GC contention. That means that barring mishap, 22 year old Sylvain Chavanel will take the overall victory in the Four Days of Dunkirk when the race finishes there tomorrow.
