Fernandes Breaks World Record to Claim 2nd Gold

Blind cyclist Pam Fernandes (Boston, Mass.) and pilot Mark Garrett (Arcadia, Calif.) won their second gold medal and set a world record in the process at the International Paralympic Committee's World Cycling Championships in Altenstadt, Germany. Fernandes and Garrett won the mixed tandem sprint (200 meters) in a record 11.36 seconds. The tandem had captured the 1 km time trial the previous day.

"We're both thrilled," Fernandes said. "It always feels great to win, but it just means so much more when you're representing your country." Fernandes, who lost her sight to diabetes at age 20, competes using a tandem bicycle guided by a sighted "pilot," in this case, Garrett, a California Highway Patrol officer and former member of the U.S. national cycling team.

"Mark and I mesh really well on the bike," said Fernandes, who just began riding with Garrett a couple years ago. "We've been training really hard for this competition, and everything just seemed to fall in place (for the world record)."

Fernandes and Garrett will get a couple days off before resuming competition in the road race divisions. Dan Nicholson (Richmond, Va.) also won his second gold medal of the competition, winning the CP3 3 km pursuit in 4.15.40. Nicholson broke the world record for his classification in the event during Tuesday's semifinal with a time of 4.13.22. Al Michini (Salt Lake City, Utah) placed fourth in the CP4 3 km pursuit in 4.01.5.

In the women's 3 km pursuit, which was contested Tuesday, Barb Buchan (Bend, Ore.) and Allison Jones (Colorado Springs, Colo.) continued Team USA's dominance in women's cycling by finishing first and second respectively. Times were not provided because they were adjusted depending on each athlete's disability classification.

In the LC2 4 km pursuit for cyclists with a single-leg, below-the-knee amputation, Dory Selinger (Oakland, Calif.) turned in the fastest qualifying time with an American record 5.00.20. Paul Martin (Boulder, Colo.) and Ron Williams (Birmingham, Ala.) failed to advance out of the semifinals. Martin finished fifth overall, and Williams was seventh. Selinger will race in the gold-medal match-up Thursday morning.
