Report

By Brian Stephens, Australian U23 coach

On Monday the AIS Mapei Aqua team rode Giro del Belvedere, the second Under 23 World Cup event this year. It was held in Vittoria Veneto, in the north of Italy. The riders competing were Simon Gerrans, Gene Bates, David McPartland, Ashley Humbert, Jeremy Yates and David Pell.

The course consisted or 17 laps of a mainly flat circuit with a solid climb followed by 2 laps of an extended course with a very steep climb of 3 km with sections of 20%. Daniel Mackey attacked the sprint primes, winning two and David Pell had a very good attempt at breaking away before the big climbs started but was caught shortly before them.

Gene Bates rode a fantastic race to finish in a group just behind the winners running 9th. Ashley Humbert showed what an emerging young talent he is to run 16th in a top class international field.
