Kemna best sprinter after a day full of attacks

108 riders were at the start in Boxmeer for the second stage of the Ster Elektrotoer. Nicki Sörensen (CSC-Tiscali) stayed in the hotel, suffering from the (minor) injuries of his crash yesterday. The first rider to attack in this stage was none other than yellow jersey Gerben Löwik. He was joined by Roberto Lochowski (EDS-Fakta), Marcel Luppes (Axa), Martijn Maaskant (Van Hemert) and Marek Galinski (CCC-Polsat). After they were taken back, eight riders formed a promising break: Magnus Backstedt (EDS-Fakta), Luca Barattero (Index-Alexia), Angelo van Melis (Dutch Nat. Team), Bjarke Nielsen (CSC-Tiscali), Bert Roesems (Palmans-Collstrop), Pawel Zugaj (Mróz), Rudi Kemna (BankGiroLoterij) and Sven Krauss (Gerolsteiner). Due to the chase by Rabobank and Axa the peloton split, and the first group of 43 riders bridged the gap to the eight in front.
Three of the eight from the break tried another attempt: Angelo van Melis, Pawel Zugaj and Magnus Backstedt, this time along with Tom Cordes (Bert Story-Piels). Thirteen riders were on the chase, trailing by 35-50 seconds: Roberto Lochowski (EDS-Fakta), Roman Luhovyy (Colpack), Jan Hordijk (Axa), Peter Wuyts (Palmans-Collstrop), Mateusz Mróz (Mróz), Sebastiano Scotti (Index-Alexia), Jeroen Boelen (Van Hemert Groep), Aleksandr Kolobnev (Acqua & Sapone), Remco van der Ven and Gerben Löwik (BankGiroLoterij-Batavus), Mathew Hayman (Rabobank), Bjarke Nielsen (CSC-Tiscali) and Volker Ordowski (Gerolsteiner). The two groups joined, and the peloton was five minutes behind, but there were still 120 km to go.
By the time the riders reached Sint-Michielsgestel for the first time (30 km to go), there were three riders in front: Roberto Lochowski, Peter Wuyts and Angelo van Melis, half a minute ahead of the 14 chasers. The main bunch, led by Rabobank, was closing in, now 3'30" behind. Rabobank continued the effort and closed the gap with some 10 kilometres to go. After a day full of attacks it was going to be a bunch sprint in the streets of Sint-Michielsgestel.
Rudie Kemna (BankGiroLoterij-Batavus) took the stage win, really outsprinting Julien Smink (Van Hemert) and Allan Bo Andresen (EDS-Fakta). In the sprint there was a crash, with the most important victim being yellow jersey Gerben Löwik. He got up with only some minor injuries and is expected to start tomorrow. Since the fall happened in the last kilometre he lost no time.
However his reign is probably over tomorrow as the tour hits the hills of Limburg, with a stage of 116.2 kms in the morning hours and a tough individual time trial (10.3 kms) in the evening. Saturday it gets even tougher as the riders pass the border into Belgium and cross the Ardennes. So, the red carpet is laid out for Michael Boogerd, the best climber of the group of 23 riders that gained 13 minutes on the rest in the first stage.
