Bart Voskamp takes the double

Bart Voskamp (BankGiroLoterij) has won the first of two stages on Day 3 of the Ster Elektrotoer, taking the 116 km leg from Valkenburg to Valkenburg this morning. In doing so he moved into the overall lead by two seconds from Mathew Hayman (Rabobank). With this afternoon's time trial suiting Voskamp down to the ground, he should be able to further increase that advantage.
At the start of the stage, Magnus Backstedt (EDS-Fakta), Jeroen Boelen (Van Hemert), Rik Reinerink (BankGiroLoterij), Olivier Asmaker (CSC-Tiscali) and Jaroslaw Rebiewski (CCC-Polsat) fled the bunch. On the climb of the Eyserbosweg (9 km) Backstedt and Rebiewski lost a little ground, but managed to get back. Michelle Colleoni (Colpack) bridged the gap of 25 seconds to the five man break on his own. Bobbie Traksel (Rabobank) did the same a bit later.
On the third climb of the day, the Sibbegrubbe (25 km) Asmaker went off alone. He took 15 seconds on the other fugitives, who were joined by Aleksandr Kolobnev (Acqua & Sapone). The peloton was trailing by 55 seconds. On the famous Cauberg Asmaker had 30 seconds on the seven and 40 seconds on the main bunch. The seven in pursuit were taken back on the next climb, the Geulhemmerberg.
At the first mountain prize, the Bemelerberg (40 km), Asmaker's lead had shrunk to 15 seconds. Just after the first points sprint (55 km) Asmaker was taken back. Yellow jersey Gerben Löwik gained one second as number three at the sprint.
A few kilometres before the second mountain sprint, the Loorberg (71 km), Richard Slabbekoorn (Dutch National Team) took a 15 seconds lead. After the climb he was joined by Morten Sonne (EDS-Fakta), Aleksandr Kolobnev (Acqua & Sapone), again Olivier Asmaker (CSC-Tiscali), Roman Luhovyy (Colpack) and Jürgen de Jong (Axa). After the Camerigerberg (77 km), where Kolobnev took the points, Bartosz Huzarski (Mroz) bridged the gap and Morten Sonne fell back after puncturing.
Kolobnev again was the best at the next mountain prize, the Eyserbosweg (95 km). In the peloton Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) attacked on this climb and his trail Lennie Kristensen (EDS-Fakta), Rafael Mateos Peres (Colpack), Thierry de Groote (Palmans-Collstrop), Claudio Astolfi, Kyrylo Pospeyev (Acqua & Sapone), Bert Hiemstra, Bram Schmitz, Bart Voskamp (BankGiroLoterij), Mathew Hayman (Rabobank), Francisco Cerezo (CSC-Tiscali), Marcel Strauss (Gerolsteiner) and David George (CCC-Polsat) followed.
This chasing group quickly joined the leaders. Best ranked in the leading group of nineteen riders was Mathew Hayman, third at nine seconds of yellow jersey Gerben Löwik, who missed the right train.
With 20 kilometres to go the leaders had a 45 seconds lead. Pospeyev increased his lead in the mountains classification at the last mountain sprint, the Cauberg (110 km). In the final kilometres there were several attacks, but no-one managed to get clear.
In the sprint Bart Voskamp (BankGiroLoterij) took the stage win, beating Roman Luhovyy (Colpack) and Michael Boogerd (Rabobank). Voskamp also took the yellow jersey from his team mate Gerben Löwik. The bunch finished more than two minutes behind.
In the break of nineteen there were eleven riders who were also in the break that took 13 minutes on the first stage of the race. They have to battle it out for the final victory: Rafael Mateos Peres (Colpack), Thierry de Groote (Palmans-Collstrop), Kyrylo Pospeyev (Acqua & Sapone), Bert Hiemstra, Bram Schmitz, Bart Voskamp (all BankGiroLoterij), Michael Boogerd, Mathew Hayman (both Rabobank), Francisco Cerezo (CSC-Tiscali), Marcel Strauss (Gerolsteiner) and David George (CCC). With a ITT in the evening hours, time trial specialist Voskamp is the man to beat.
