51st Herald Sun Tour - 2.3Australia, October 18-27, 2002Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - October 25: Sale Criterium, 36 kmCooke strengthens lead, Clarke wins criteriumBy Rod Morris in Moe The strong Jayco team described it as "A dream day" as the VicRoads Herald Sun Tour rolled into the Gippsland area of country Victoria. Jayco's gun rider, Baden Cooke strengthened his hold on the prized yellow jersey and teammate Matt Wilson won the tour's 10th stage, a 99.8 km journey from Sale to Moe. Today was a dual stage hit out for the tour riders, which in numbers has now been reduced from the original 80 to just 64 - and with more withdrawals expected during today's arduous climb from Warragul to Mt Baw Baw. The day started with a 36 km criterium around the streets of Sale and while Hilton Clarke (Ballarat*eureka) took line honours in a bunch sprint, it was Baden Cooke who did all of the attacking. Cooke featured in all 11 of the intermediate sprints, winning nine of them and second in the other two to earn a gigantic 31 seconds bonus. Coupled with the extra 15 seconds for finishing runner-up to Clarke. With no real dramas for Cooke in the afternoon stage to Moe, the Benalla star will now take a lead of 2.01 minutes into the weekend's final two stages. Cooke took the yellow jersey from previous leader Henk Vogels (Bicycle Superstore/Vic State Home Loans) after Thursday's climb over Mt Hotham, but to Vogels' credit, he produced a third placing in today's criterium to stay within the top 20 positions in General Classification standings. Swedish rider Jonas Ljungblad (Malaysia Airlines) remains in second position, 2.01 minutes behind Cooke, while ace Victorian David McKenzie (Active For Life) is third at 2.07 mins. Realistically any of the top 15 riders, who are within 10.27 minutes of each other are still with a chance to win the tour, although that number will be reduced dramatically after today's climb. There are still seven Australians in that top 15, heightening the distinct possibility of the first Aussie victory in the tour since the "Canberra Cannonball" - Neil Stephens was successful in 1986. The morning criterium was action packed with Cooke, Michal Precechtel of the Czech Republic riding for Latrobe City and Victorian Andrew Torney (Fitzroy Cycles/Australian Abalone Exports) making a solid early break. "Attack was the best form of defence for me," Cooke explained later. That trio took 1-2-3 in 10 of the 11 intermediate sprints and were only caught by the chasing peloton in the closing 3-laps. But to Cooke's credit, he still had enough sprint energy left in him to take third.
