Stage win for Jeremy Yates

Horner takes the lead by 3 seconds

An outstanding ride by former World Junior Champion Jeremy Yates and another change in the Tour lead were the highlights of day three of the Power Net Tour of Southland today. Yates was one of a breakaway bunch of ten which formed early in the 137 km Stage from Lumsden to the summit of the Crown Mountain Range near Queenstown.

When the break settled, the other riders in it were David Thomson (Dunedin), Hayden Godfrey (Christchurch), Karl Murray (Auckland), Anthony Chapman (Dunedin), Tom Leaper (Australia), Ryan Cull (Christchurch), Ryan Cox (South Africa) and evergreen Southland Tour rider Brian Fowler (Christchurch).

Yates later told Cyclingnews that he was lucky to make the break which at one point was out to 6'20. "I got into the break almost by accident really and I don't think that anybody realized that I'd gone."

The stage finish was on the summit and on this final climb Yates really showed his class. The size of the leading group reduced dramatically in the final kilometres and approaching the Yates rode away to claim the stage win from Leaper and Cox. The win has moved Yates up ten places on GC and he is now seventh at 1'47.

A big ride from American Chris Horner to finish seventh, 1'56 behind the stage winner, saw him take over the Yellow Jersey from Scott Guyton who is now second at three seconds. At one point during the Stage Veteran Brian Fowler was the race leader on the road but after finishing fifth today he is eighth overall at 1'57.

Horner, riding in a strong Calder Stewart team with fellow Internationals Eric Wohlberg (Canada) and Australians Peter Rogers, Michael Johnson and Hilton Clarke is happy to be wearing Yellow.

"As we climbed that last bit I was confident that I would have it," he said.

Among the riders to withdraw today was yesterday's stage winner Jason Allen.
