Rogers takes the lead with strong performance on Bluff Hill

Australian Peter Rogers, riding for an overseas "combo" team threw down the gauntlet to the home based Kiwis after winning stage two in the tour of Southland, a 52km ride from Invercargill to the top of Bluff Hill, the furthermost southern point on the South Island of New Zealand.
On the two kilometre wall like climb up the hill to the stage finish, Rogers rode away to beat American Kevin Monahan by nine seconds with Gordon McCauley, who had led for most of the climb, third at 32 seconds.
New Zealand Road Champion McCauley was defiant after also making the pace in the morning criterium stage. Referring to Rogers, who now wears the Yellow Jersey, he told Cyclingnews "If he thinks that he's going to have an easy ride in the jersey then he better think again."
Only two overseas riders, both Australians, have ever won the Tour but at the conclusion of Day One, five of the first eight on General Classification are from outside New Zealand. After the morning Criterium stage, winner John Lieswyn (USA) said that he regarded the Australians as being almost domestic New Zealanders in the Tour but the leading Kiwis have other ideas about that. The Southland Tour has traditionally developed into a New Zealand versus the rest race and this year's tour looks to be no different.
