Lieswyn takes stage one in repeat performance

American John Lieswyn knows all about winning Criteriums at Invercargill.
The 34 year old, riding for the local Winton Middle Pub team won the opening Criterium Stage of the Powernet Tour of Southland for the second consecutive year, holding off late challenges from Phillip Schnender (Switzerland) and Scott Guyton (NZ).
Lieswyn was concerned at his fitness levels coming into the race nursing an injury from a previous race. "I hadn't ridden my bike at all for the past three days, so I was definitely on the fresh side" he said.

With a lap to go Lieswyn followed a break by New Zealand Road Champion Gordon McCauley and shook the Kiwi off on the final corner 200 metres from the finish." I knew he was a good man to be with because he has a powerful team working for him," said Lieswyn
Lieswyn also paid tribute to his own team and its leader, eight times Tour winner Brian Fowler. "I certainly wasn't the strongest man out there today but I tried to use my strength at the right places. My team were so good, we just went one-two-three, one-two-three for the whole race," he said.
Former World Junior Champion Jeremy Yates had a big ride, hunting down all of the breaks and he was rewarded with the Sprint Ace Jersey and the Under 23 lead.
