Pole pole vaults into lead as Pollack is pole axed
Polish rider Piotr Przydzial (CCC-Polsat) is the new overall leader in the Peace Race after winning the fourth stage from his teammate Ondrej Sosenka. The pair attacked with 114 km to go on the long 232 km stage from Mladá Boleslav to Chemnitz, catching and dropping early breakaway Daniel Czajkowaski (Servisco) to eventually finish 2'51 clear of defending champion Jakob Piil (CSC). The remnants of the peloton followed at four minutes, while race leader Olaf Pollack (Gerolsteiner) lost over 33 minutes.
The stage that took the riders from the Czech Republic into Germany was not only long, it was hilly as well. Two category 1 and four category 2 climbs punctuated the latter half of the stage, and there were certain to be some large gaps by the finish.
Two riders Jurgen Van de Walle (Vlaanderen) and Daniel Czajkowski (Servisco) decided to seal their fate by attacking from the start. It didn't take long for their lead to reach 10 minutes, as the peloton could afford to let them go, knowing what was to come. Their maximum lead was 12 minutes, but by the 100th kilometre Van de Walle was on his own, with a long way to go.
Olaf Pollack was already in difficulty at this stage as the riders tackled the climbs around Novo Mesto. The peloton splintered as favourites Piotr Przydzial and Ondrej Sosenka gave chase to the now separated breakaways. The pair of CCC-Polsat riders quickly reeled in the fading Czaikowski, with a minute's lead on the main field. Czaikowski was dropped and Przydzial and Sosenka then set about catching Van de Walle.
The Belgian gradually lost time to the pair and he was caught with 62 km to go. The gap to the main field was now 3 minutes, with a four man chasing group containing Paul Van Hyfte (CSC), Zbigniew Piatek (Mroz), Andris Reiss (Index-Alexia), and Severyn Kohut (De Nardi) following the leaders.
Van de Walle lost contact at km 185, and the two CCC riders were now alone in the lead. The peloton with Piil, Garmendia, Bartko, Plaza, Poitschke, and Liese could not close the gap, as the other four chasing riders eventually fell back to the group.
Piil attacked with 20 km to go to try and limit the damage, and succeeded in getting within 2'51 of the two leaders. However the day belonged to Przydzial and Sosenka, who crossed the line virtually together and celebrated a fine victory, also taking a commanding lead on the general classification.
