41st Rund um den Henninger Turm - 1.1/1.7.1Germany, May 1, 20022001 Results Results U23 Results Past winners Zabel wins his second Henninger TurmBy Jeff Jones Just as he did in 1999, Team Telekom's 'Topfahrer' Erik Zabel has won the Rund um den Henninger Turm, held in Frankfurt. Despite a relatively slow start to the year, Zabel certainly had his eyes on the prize today, showing excellent form on the tough 206 km course to arrive at the finish in a group of 57 riders. His Telekom team performed superbly, guiding him to the finish where he executed a textbook sprint to beat Jo Planckaert (Cofidis), Serguei Ivanov (Fassa Bortolo) and Oscar Freire (Mapei). In cool, overcast conditions, the peloton set out from Frankfurt for a hilly 206 kilometre ride, incorporating three 33 km laps after an initial 76 km tour. The first breakaway to stick came from Polish strong man Piotr Przydzial (CCC-Polsat), Slovenian Gorazd Stangelj (Fassa Bortolo) and Belgian Dave Bruylandts (Domo). With Telekom and Gerolsteiner keeping a tight rein on the bunch, the trio were not allowed to get much more than 2 minutes in front, as Przydial showed impressive strength on the climbs to claim the mountains prize. As the gap came down to under a minute on the second lap, last year's runner up Davide Rebellin jumped clear on the Mammolshainer to bridge to the three leaders. Rebellin injected a new impetus into the break, and they were able to stay clear of the peloton. However, others were getting itchy feet, as Amstel Gold Race winner Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo) bridged the gap, along with teammate Serguei Ivanov, Telekom's Steffen Wesemann and CSC's Nicki Sørensen. But this high quality group could not withstand the Telekom motors, who were working solely for Zabel and chased them down. Przydzial somehow stayed away for longer, firstly in the company of an EDS-fakta rider, and then with Thorsten Schmidt (Gerolsteiner) and Nicki Sørensen (CSC). Finally, on the second of three 4.5 kilometre finishing circuits, the Pole was caught and rode out the rest of the race in the bunch. Schmidt and Sørensen stayed away until one lap to go, but they too could not break free of the now Telekom/Mapei/Fassa Bortolo-led bunch. A mass sprint was inevitable, with Zabel, Freire, Petacchi, Ivanov, Planckaert all in with a chance. The Telekom train had disintegrated by this stage, with Mapei and Fassa taking over the leadout. But Zabel was excellently placed and started the sprint in second wheel. He had no problems coming around Ivanov to take the win, with Jo Planckaert sneaking up for second place. Afterwards, Zabel commented that "Like in my 1999 victory and that of Olaf Ludwig in 1994, the team burned itself out at the end of the race. Luckily, there was another chasing pair of Tafi and Nardello of Mapei. In the sprint, I followed Fassa Bortolo. I was on Ivanov's wheel, but I did not feel good, Petacchi and Freire were on my back wheel. The last 100 metres took forever, that is actually not a good finishing situation on an uphill finishing straight." PhotographyPhotos by AFP, Hans Will/www.radsport-forum.de and Miwako Sasaki
