16th Tour of the Gila - (NE)Silver City, New Mexico, May 1-5, 2002Main Page Previous stage Next stage Stage 2 - May 2: Silver City to Mogollon Road Race, 92/70 miles (M/W)Jeanson climbs to victory number two, Mercury applies total domination for top two finishBy Steve Farris Weather: Clear and unseasonably brisk with strong crosswinds. WomenThe women's race started quietly untill thing were woken up about 20 miles in by Ina Teutenberg (Saturn) and Stacey Peeters (ICO) who went off the front after the first of two, 15second bonus sprints. For the next 40 miles Saturn continuously worked to get some sort of break going but RONA rode at the front and closed everything down until the approach of the day's major obstacle. As the peloton got close to the base of the six mile Category one climb, Genevieve Jeanson (Rona) launched off the front. Her acceleration shattered a field that had already been reduced to about 35 riders by the constant tempo and the gutterball being played in a very strong crosswind that increased in ferocity as the day went on. Only a group of 10 could stay with Jeanson and one by one they fell away, As they hit the first two mile stretch of the climb only Kimberly Bruckner and a surprisingly fit-looking Anna Millward (Saturn) were able to keep her in sight. Then Millward faded and Bruckner continued on alone. Genevieve soloed in for an impressive win with Bruckner losing 2:47 by the finish line. Despite being far back in the field as the climb started Jeanie Longo put an impressive performance in passing numerous women on the hill to end up third, 4:31 back. RONA carried the day but their long hours at the front of the race may tell in the next few days. However, with lots of climbing to come Jeanson looks untouchable barring a freak disaster. (Thanks to Roz Reekie (New Zealand) of Mercy Cycling for the inside view of the action in the peloton.) MenMercury controlled today's stage of the Tour of the Gila for the entire 90 miles, clearly intending to make sure their climbers, Wherry and Moninger, were in position to make their move on the final climb. A few "suicide" breaks went away but gained no major time. In fact, no breakaway has ever succeded on this stage since the race's inception. The peloton hit the base of the days final climb mostly intact and a phalanx of Mercury riders took over the front and set a blistering pace on the steeper first section of the climb. I was returning to Silver City after the women's finish when they passed me on this stretch and were almost literally flying up the hill. Mercury's pacemaking quickly reduced to field of 110 riders to about 30, and one by one these fell away, as did Mercury's "worker bees". Finally only race leader Wherry, and last year's winner Moninger were left at the front, and they rode in together with Moninger taking the stage and Wherry retaining the leader jersey. Cyclingnews diarist John Lieswyn (another former Tour of the Gila winner) had a great ride to take fifth, only 00:46 back. Third went to SoBe's Tom Danielson and Arizona's Scott Price riding for regional powerhouse Landis/Trek took fourth. Saturn's best placed rider was Eric Wohlberg in seventh at 1:11, while Prime Alliance was relegated to eighth and ninth places by Danny Pate and Chris Horner. Mercury now holds first and second on the GC, with Wohlberg in third at 1:33. Unless a chink can be found in their armour, it appears Mercury is going to be hard to beat in the next three days. Expect all their challengers to come out with guns blazing for tomorrow's "Inner Loop RR" which starts at nearby Ft. Bayard, an outpost that was originally founded to defend the gold mining camps near here in the late 1860s.
Team Rona report Time trial one day, road race the next - Rona's Genevieve Jeanson proved today that when the going is hilly, she is very, very hard to beat, taking the 112 kilometer road race by a margin of 2 min 47 over Kimberly Bruckner (Saturn), and putting heerlf almost four minutes ahead on general classification. French icon Jeannie Longo was third, at 4Õ31Õ, followed by Anna Millward (Saturn). JeansonÕs teammate Karen Bockel rounded out the top five at 6Õ13ÕÕ. Once again very strong winds were blowing over New Mexico today, doing nothing to help the racers who had to climb to an altitude of 2072 meters to get to the finish line. For the first 40km, a mainly downhill road, the women studied each other. A four-rider breakaway was igniored by most of the field, with Rona controlling the pace so that the escape never gained more than a 30 or 40 second advantage. At mid race, the climbs replaced the descents. After more than 80km, the main field caught up with the breakaway and Rona started to up the pressure, defending against attacks from Saturn riders. With 18 km to go, Rona put the pressure on again. Melissa Holt (NZL) led out team-mate Bockel who handed the lead to Jeanson. For six or seven kilometres, the main field was 20 seconds behind her. The finale was a 10km climb that started at 1432 meters of altitude to end 640 meters later. Jeanson didnÕt need any greater chance to explode and finish way in front of her rivals. Tomorrow in stage three, the racers will make a 116.8 km loop around Ft. Boyard.
