Halgand fastest into Wasquehal

It may have been too late for the team's Tour de France chances, but Patrice Halgand's victory in the first stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk gave Jean Delatour a much needed morale boost with a long season ahead of them. Halgand, one of the team's most talented riders, beat Estonian Janek Tombak (Cofidis) and Lithuanian Linas Balciunas (Ag2r) in a sprint of eight riders, the remnants of a group of 21 that had escaped earlier in the stage.
Before the crucial split happened at kilometre 75, Serguei Krushevski (St Quentin Oktos) had escaped after just 11 kilometres, building a maximum lead of 6'05 which diminished as he approached day's main difficulties: the mont des Cats and mont Noir. He was caught by a group of 20 riders before the climbs, with Australian Corey Sweet (BankGiroLoterij) taking the mountain points for the day.
The group included last year's winner Didier Rous and his two teammates Sylvain Chavanel and Emmanuel Magnien (Bonjour), as well as Leon Van Bon (Domo), Laurent Brochard and Patrice Halgand (Jean Delatour), Jean-Patrick Nazon and Brad McGee (FdJ), Raivis Belohvosciks and Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre), Tombak (Cofidis), Balciunas (Ag2r) and several others.
The leading group was well represented, and the peloton let the gap go out to around 3 minutes before it stabilised. Notable absentees were Laurent Jalabert's CSC-Tiscali team and Andrea Tafi's Mapei-Quick Step team, who were without Oscar Freire, a late non-starter.
The attacks started shortly before the finish, with a smaller group of eight riders getting away to contest the stage win. In the sprint, Halgand showed his prowess over Tombak and Balciunas, and earned the right to wear the leader's jersey for tomorrow.
Tomorrow's second stage is from Hellemmes to Steenvoorde over 190 km, and includes the ascent of Mont Cassel, which has to be tackled three times.
