57th Dwars door Vlaanderen - 1.2Belgium, March 27, 20022001 Results Results Past winners Cooke with last kilometre burst
The fortunes of La Francaise des Jeux continue to improve this season with a win today in the 57th Dwars Door Vlaanderen in Belgium. Australian sprinter Baden Cooke surprised his other three breakaway companions with an attack with 1 kilometre to go to take the honours, beating Hungarian Laszlo Bodrogi, and Belgians Jo Planckaert (Cofidis) and Peter Van Petegem (Lotto). It was Cooke's first win of the season after several podium finishes. The 201 kilometre race was held in perfect spring weather, with very little wind, bright blue skies and 11 degree temperatures. The start was in Kortrijk and the riders took a circuitous route through West and East Flanders before the finish in Waregem. Key points were the climbs of Kluisberg (tackled twice), Valkenberg, Eikenberg, Oude Kwaremont, Patersberg, and Nokereberg, which came at 6 kilometres to go. A breakaway of fourteen riders including a few big names (Museeuw, Planckaert, Eeckhout and Van Petegem) was whittled down to just four (Cooke, Van Petegem, Planckaert and Bodrogi) towards the end. Baden Cooke had good legs, with his second attack proving successful. He rode away from the others with a kilometre to go to take his biggest career win in his third year as a pro. The sprint for second was won by Bodrogi from Planckaert and Van Petegem. Last year's winner Niko Eeckhout (Lotto) finished in sixth place, a few lengths behind the break. PhotographyPhoto's by AFP
