3rd Memorial G. Perin - 1.7.1Italy, June 1, 2002ReportBy Brian Stephens/AIS U23 coach The Memorial Perin started with 5 laps of a 10 km flat course followed by the same lap with 2 hills attached making 17 km for another 5 laps. Total distance was 140km. Not much occurred on the early circuits but the race came alive when the group hit the climbs. With 2 laps remaining a 17 man group gained a 30 second advantage without an AIS representative. The team quickly got together and worked well to get the break back just as they hit the last climb. Simon Gerrans was the one to make it into the group and 24 riders fought out the finish. The attacks over the final kilometers split the group again with 4 getting clear to sprint for the win with Mirko Allegrini from Trevigiani getting the decision, with Simon comming in with the next group to take 9th.
