International Paralympic Committee World Cycling Championships-CMAltenstadt, Germany, August 5-12, 2002Main Page  Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 1 - August 5:Nicholson Breaks CP3 Time Trial Recordby Paul Meznarich (US Paralympics) Two-time Paralympian Dan Nicholson (Richmond, Va.) won a world title and set a world record for CP3 cyclists Monday, at the IPC World Cycling Championships. Nicholson captured the 1 km time trial for cyclists with cerebral palsy in a world record time of 1 minute, 19.75 seconds. Meanwhile, teammate Dory Selinger (Oakland, Calif.) also claimed gold in the LC2 1 km time trial for cyclists with a single-leg amputation below the knee in 1:12.67. Selinger led an impressive U.S. barrage in the LC2 category. Paul Martin (Boulder, Colo.) and Ron Williams (Birmingham, Ala.) placed third (1:14.02) and fourth (1:14.70) respectively. The Czech Republic's Jiri Jekez placed second in 1:13.50. "Things felt nice and comfortable out there. I really needed the win out there today,"said Selinger, who is just returning from an injury. "I'm especially pleased with how the rest of my teammates performed. People should be getting nervous about us for the team road race." Bob Whitford (Austin, Texas) just missed the medals stand, placing fourth in the LC1 1 km time trial in 1:13.70. Whitford will have another attempt at a world championship medal when he teams with Selinger and Brad Cobb (Bartlesville, Okla.) Tuesday in the bronze medal match-up in the team Olympic sprint. Blind cyclist Pam Fernandes (Boston, Mass.) and pilot Mark Garrett advanced to Wednesday's finals in the mixed tandem sprint. The IPC World Cycling Championships is the premier cycling competition for cyclists with physical disabilities. More than 400 athletes from 38 countries are competing at this year's championships.
