11th Tour Down Under - ProTAdelaide, South Australia, Australia, January 18-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Stage 6 - January 25: Adelaide City Council Circuit, 90 kmChicchi claims in messy finaleDavis' day in the glorious Adelaide sunBy Les Clarke in Adelaide, Australia Francesco Chicchi did an Italian Job on the Tour Down Under's final stage today, with victory after a fast 90 kilometres around Adelaide's North Terrace. In a confusing finale, Liquigas' designated sprinter profited from a coming together of Graeme Brown and Robbie McEwen in the last 20 metres, skirting between the two Australians to take the win. The day belonged to Quick Step's Allan Davis however; the overall winner could celebrate his first victory in the race he has contested 11 times. It was reward for riding every edition of Australia's premier stage race, and confirmation that the time may have come for this talented rider who has shown from a young age that he's capable of big things. This week the boy from Bundaberg has doubled his tally of Tour Down Under stage wins, having won his first only three years ago. With some sizzling form in bunch kicks, he has clearly earned the respect of his teammates, who have worked tirelessly for him since the beginning of the race. "To start the season on the right foot is unbelievable," said Davis. "I'd just like to thank the team – the result shows the respect they have for me. "Without them there's no way I could have been here in this jersey today. The day to Victor Harbor had a lot of unfortunate accidents and there were crashes all day. I was involved in the first one with last year's winner André Greipel, who had a collision with the motorbike. "After that I was way out the back of the race and they waited for me; we just kept going, and worked our back into the front of the peloton and we were lucky enough to pull off a second in the stage." It was at this point that Davis, and those watching him, started to believe he could seriously be in contention for the overall victory. The next two days' racing confirmed this. Another win in Angaston brought him even closer to the crown, while Quick Step's performance in delivering him to the right place for sprint in yesterday's Willunga stage displayed the mettle needed to take the year's first ProTour event. All week Davis has paid tribute to his team's efforts, and today was no different. It also signifies the cementing of his place as one of Quick Step's trusted winners. "It just goes to show the professionalism of this outfit, and hopefully this is the start of a few big things coming. I wasn't going for the sprint victory today, I was concentrating on the overall win. That's how it worked out, so it all went to plan. "My main objective for the start of the season is Milan-Sanremo – my training all winter's been based on hitting peak form in March. This is just the start of it. I'll celebrate this win as a team. I was supposed to fly back this afternoon but I've changed it so I go back to my hometown of Bundaberg tomorrow. I can celebrate with the boys for the hard work they've put in during the week. How it unfoldedTaking a virtually unassailable 25-second lead into the final stage, Allan Davis was aiming to spend the final stage tucked safely into the womb of his team, which has successfully guarded him all week. While fans of Stuart O'Grady were hoping that their man would miraculously make up the deficit to Davis, it seemed that the status quo on general classification would be maintained. That was the eventual result, although not before a large break took flight from the bunch early in the 18-lap event. The escape contained the likes of Luis León Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne), Bernhard Eisel (Team Columbia), Christian Knees (Milram) and the man who has been on the attack all week, Jack Bobridge. The UniSA-Australia rider has become the darling of his local fans, and proved again today that his style of racing is exciting and raw. He said he has taken a lot from this edition of the Tour Down Under, including a lot of TV time, the respect of his colleagues and the chance at a professional contract in the future – all thanks to his willingness to do the hard yards off the front of the peloton. "That's the way I always race," he explained after the stage. "I've gotten myself out there and been noticed this week, along with the spills and everything else we've taken from the week it's been fantastic." While the break was always doomed to fail thanks to Quick Step's control of the peloton, in the second last lap fans were treated to an attack from Lance Armstrong. He surged from the bunch up Montefiore Hill and joined the seven-rider group that countered when the original escape was reeled in. It meant little in the final outcome, as Quick Step wound up the pace in the closing lap to keep its man near the front, not with the intention of delivering him for a fourth stage win, however. That was left up to Brown and McEwen, as each tried to salvage something from the week's racing. Neither succeeded in their endeavours, as a clash in the final metres lead to Brown pulling his foot out of his pedal, and the movement caused McEwen to lose momentum in his final push for the line. Having followed Greg Henderson as he struck out early in the sprint, Chicchi snuck through to take the win and leave Australia with another victory in his bag. McEwen and Brown were visibly irritated after the finish, not least of all by the fact that they let a win slip through their fingers after a week that has been mixed in fortunes for each. It was a dramatic conclusion to a race that has enjoyed plenty of action and attention and lived up to expectations of kicking off 2009 with a bang.
