11th Tour Down Under - ProTAdelaide, South Australia, Australia, January 18-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - January 23: Burnside Village - Angaston, 143 kmDavis doubles up to retain leadBonus seconds crucial leading into showdownBy Les Clarke in Adelaide, Australia Allan Davis' Adelaide odyssey continued today with another powerful sprinting display to win stage four of the Tour Down Under in Angaston. Wearing the leader's ochre jersey after a torturous day in the saddle yesterday, Davis could count on his Quick Step teammates to reel in the day's breakaway and set up the Queenslander for his second victory of this year's edition. "I'm back in the winners' circle, although I didn't feel that good today," said Davis after beating Rabobank's Graeme Brown to the line, reversing yesterday's finishing positions in Victor Harbor. "I had very stiff legs after the crash yesterday – to be honest I thought it was going to be the breakaway [that took the win] today but we got it at the finish, and I'm very lucky to come away with the win," he explained. The day's action was again dictated by a significant breakaway, which battled hard to stay away from the second kilometre – at which point it started – to the finish. With three riders present in the early move, including UniSA-Australia's Travis Meyer, they were able to maintain an advantage over the peloton until the KOM point after 103km. Alexander Efimkin, Andoni Lafuente and Meyer took flight from a bunch seeking some respite from yesterday's battering shortly after the end of the neutral section, and after 19km had established a healthy 4:30 lead on the way to a maximum 9:30 advantage. Consequently, it looked as though the break could stay away, as Meyer explained. "I had a bit of false hope when the break was out by such a long way. I thought they might let the break go for the win today," said the young West Australian. "I have no intentions on the points jersey; none of our riders are really a long way up there on the standings either, so the Euskaltel guy asked if he could take the points and our team loses nothing from giving them the points, and I gain nothing from grabbing points." It wasn't to be a day of glory for the trio however, as Lafuente dropped off the pace on the climb, the leading duo was caught during the final 20 kilometres and a bunch kick ensued. Davis took advantage of the excellent leadout from Rabobank for Brown, and he came around his countryman with 20 metres remaining for another convincing win. "Once again my team was unbelievable – this week's it's been great," said Davis. "Whatever happens from now will be a bonus. I think the ochre jersey might help. With a kilometre to go I was pretty buggered and Rabobank was pretty well lined up in front of Brownie's wheel; he did an awesome sprint and I pretty much opened up like he did yesterday... I got a good run to the line. Well done Brownie, and I'm just happy to get the win today." How it unfoldedThe peloton set off from Burnside Village shortly after 11am, with another excellent turnout from Adelaide's public and those visiting the South Australian capital. Missing was defending champion André Greipel, who abandoned the race after dislocating his shoulder in a crash yesterday. Mark Renshaw told Cyclingnews before the start that he would be the go-to man for the stage after winning here last year. It would be safe to say that the day was going to end in another bunch sprint, although it would have to wait until a three-man break contested all the day's sprint and KOM points. Alexander Efimkin (Ag2R-La Mondiale), Andoni Lafuente (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Travis Meyer (UniSA-Australia) managed to build up an advantage quickly, and before long it was in excess of six minutes. The trio managed to put more time into the peloton, and with another challenging KOM looming in Menglers Hill, it was bound to be a mere formality once the bunch – motivated by Team Katusha's work on the front – ate the three escapees' lead. That's exactly what happened, as the final 20 kilometres saw several attacks come from within the peloton, which spelled the end of the day's break and the start of the dash to the line for the sprinters' teams. Front and centre of these was Rabobank, which was taking its man Brown to the line, and he praised his teammates' efforts after another day of toil in the punishing Australian sun. "People don't see what they do but they were riding in the wind for me all day, getting bidons and stuff," said Brown. "Throughout the course of the race they're great, and at the finish they were sensational. I'm a little bi disappointed for the team, actually, that I couldn't win for them." The big question mark is whether Brown will be able to get over Old Willunga Hill twice during tomorrow's fifth stage. Some say he can't, while the sprinter is putting his faith in the Rabobank squad. "I think that even if I couldn't get over the top in the front they'll be there to get or thereabouts to get me back on. I'm pretty confident in the team and its ability," he said. While Brown was disappointed, Davis was quietly ecstatic. "This is the great thing about this race; everyone's got an opportunity and if they want it they've just got to take with it with both hands," said Davis after doing just that. "I've obviously got a good opportunity to win tomorrow and win the tour. I'm just happy to be in the jersey for these three days, and to get two wins is just unbelievable for the team. No matter what happens now, we're happy." Davis has definitely cemented his place as a favourite for the title, although considering events of the past few seasons, he's just happy to be racing, with winning the obvious upside. "It's unbelievable; over the last couple of days, not just for me but for all the Aussies here, the crowd is unbelievable and just spurs us on. They're not used to seeing Aussies in a race, especially with a group full of Europeans. It really gives us that little bit extra, and it's a bit overwhelming."
