11th Tour Down Under - ProTAdelaide, South Australia, Australia, January 18-25, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - January 22: Unley - Victor Harbor, 136 kmRabobank's organisation amongst chaosFavourites fall as Davis holds overallBy Les Clarke in Adelaide, South Australia Graeme Brown had threatened to take a win this week at the Tour Down Under, and in Victor Harbor today he made good on that with a win after the tough third stage. On a day punctuated by wind, crashes, attacks and a star-studded breakaway, the touch paper has been lit and an explosive finale guaranteed after today's fireworks. While Brown was celebrating a sensational team win, defending champion André Greipel was undergoing X-rays on a dislocated shoulder, suffered during a crash just before the 20km mark. Team Columbia's German sprinter, who looked to be in a position to take the title for a second successive season, hit a police motorbike and was forced to abandon midway through the stage. Quick Step's Allan Davis, who wore the leader's ochre jersey today, was also involved in the incident, which threatened his overall advantage. "That was one of the hardest stages I've done here in 11 years," said Davis. "My day started with a crash into a motorbike as I was following Greipel. "There was a parked motorbike on the side – a fair bit onto the road. I knew André was going to hit it so moved over to the right but he hit it and his bike just flew out from under him and in front of me and Nicholas Roche." Baden Cooke was another casualty of the day's racing, the rider who had hoped to cement his position amongst the leaders after a strong showing thus far in Adelaide. UniSA-Australia manager Dave Sanders told Cyclingnews that it was unknown for most of the stage as to the whereabouts of Cooke, and it was later revealed he is in hospital undergoing treatment for injuries suffered as a result of the accident. Rabobank's fast man, Brown, managed to keep clear of the drama ahead of him and was taken to an immaculate victory ahead of countrymen Davis and Stuart O'Grady (Saxo Bank). He was full of praise for the hard work of the boys in orange, who also suffered an abandonment of one of their teammates today - Kai Reus. "Hats off to my team – it's definitely a team victory," said Brown. "There was an awesome break up the road that had all the names that should have been in it but I geed the boys up a bit – they just rode unreal. They put themselves in line and they were tired, then at the end Matty Hayman did an unreal job. "I think I proved myself yesterday on a fairly tough circuit – they had full confidence in me, so thank you very much Rabobank. I've got really good form, and every time there's a sprint I want to win. This was a really tough stage and finish, and I knew it was a good opportunity for me." Teammate Mat Hayman was the last man to take Brown to the line, and after the rest of the team had worked hard on the front of the bunch to control the gap to the leaders, the Australian finished the job for his countryman to sprint to the line and celebrate a great victory. "Today was the hardest day of the tour so far. It was like Mission Impossible, with 10 of the best riders up the road that group had every good rider," said Hayman. "The start today was vicious. I was speaking to guys and they said it was like a Tour de France stage. It just didn't stop – crashes, and the wind… it was chaos." How it unfoldedHigh winds, a motivated peloton and massive crowds characterised the start of today's 136km stage to Victor Harbor. It wasn't long until the attacks started, although nothing stuck until a group of 15 went clear after 21 kilometres, soon after the early crash took out the defending champion. With the likes of O'Grady, Armstrong, Rogers and Matt Wilson in the leading bunch, it was surprising to see it given any time at all, let alone 1:50 at its maximum. This selection contested all the day's intermediate sprints and vied for king of the mountains points. O'Grady looked in ominous form all day, taking sprint points at will on his way to securing the lead in this classification and third place overall. As the race sped along towards the seaside resort that always proves one of the most popular with fans – today was no exception – it looked more likely that the break, which had survived the wind, testing terrain and even helicopter wash on its 100km-plus journey, would stay away to the finish. It wasn't to be, and Brown admitted that he thought a big bunch kick would be possible. With Rabobank and Quick Step keen to set their men up for the victory, the chase was left until very late. "For a while there I thought that break was going to stay away till the end of the race but we got the boys on the front just after the category one climb and it was slowly coming back," said Brown. "I wasn't sure, but it came back and worked out well. It was a very tough finish." Hayman, Rabobank's 'general' in this situation explained that, "When we got to the top of that climb [second KOM] it was a hard task for them to start riding and they just had two minutes. "I said to them, 'Just ride tempo, hopefully a couple of the other teams will come and we'll see what happens'. It looked like it was never going to happen, and finally more teams came and we closed it down. "A big hats off to them today – I just felt for them all day, suffering on the front. It meant Graeme and I couldn't give up and we had to pull something out for the boys." Davis' day was almost ruined by the crash that took out Greipel, and it got no easier thanks to the illustrious names in the break. His team was having nothing of it, and helped him retain the overall lead. "We had no friends there today and no one was waiting," said Davis. "I'd like to thank my team, because without them I'd still be coming. Once we got back on we made sure we stayed in the front, and there was another big crash and we missed that, so we were lucky to miss that one. I took second again, so it's not too bad." He also paid tribute to the work done by Brown's team, and the two embraced after the finish, despite being rivals in the finale. "They [Rabobank riders] did a great job – full credit to them because Brownie repaid them with a win today. Garmin did a great job to bring the break back, and of course our team, Quick Step, did the rest. You can't get any more exciting than this. It's the best racing you can get and I hope everyone's enjoying it." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Roberto Bettini/www.bettiniphoto.net
