14th Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 9-15, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - February 14: Batang Kali - Shah Alam, 147.6 kmNo guesses as Gavazzi wins againBy Daniel Benson in Shah Alam Mattia Gavazzi (Diquigiovanni-Androni) won stage six of the Tour of Langkawi, 147.6 kilometres from Batang Kali to Shah, taking a photo finish sprint ahead of Aurélien Clerc (AG2R) and Chris Sutton (Garmin-Slipstream). The Italian has won an incredible four stages in the race, while his teammate, Jose Serpa, leads the overall going into tomorrow's final stage. After yesterday's mountain exploits and with Genting Highlands acting as a fitting backdrop for the start, the riders set off from Batang Kai, moving south for what promised to be a flat and fast encounter. And despite the previous day's efforts the bunch lived up to expectations, covering the first few kilometres at over 53 km/h and with riders attacking from the gun. "Now that the overall has been spread out and we've seen a lot of riders lose time, we could see a really frantic start. Lots of teams will be launching riders up the road," said Ireland's Philip Deignan at the start. After a quiet day in the mountains on stage 5, the Chinese team was the first to try its luck but with a number of teams controlling matters at the front each attempt was quickly closed down, and by kilometre 35 the peloton was back together again. It wasn't long before the first serious group succeeded with nine riders going clear after the fourth category climb of Bukit Badong. The break, containing Hilton Clarke (Fuji-Survetto), Fortunato Baliani (CSF Group Navigare), Cameron Meyer (Garmin-Slipstream), Shinichi Fukushima (EQA), Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R), Johann Rabie (South Africa), Pascal Hungerbühler (Vorarlberg – Corratec), Jose Angel Gómez Marchante (Cervélo TestTeam). It looked to have the quality to stay away but with the Cervélo rider lying just 3:37 and in ninth place overall, the peloton was quickly brought back into action, holding the group at 1:30, as Australia and Diquigiovanni-Androni set the pace. "I was telling Merchante to get outta there but he didn't want to go," said Meyer. "There was no way we'd get away with him. So I hit him with an attack and got a gap." Meyer didn't go alone and was joined by Clarke, Baliani and Fukushima as the remnants of the group, and a reluctant Merchante, sat up and waited for their inevitable fate. "It was perfect with four of us clear. Everything to me would have made sense, I thought that the bunch was going to have a rest day and that we were going to go away and have a chance," said Clarke. Tearing across the wide Malaysian roads, the four riders held their lead but with ISD joining the pursuit the gap never exceeded 1:15. "They had no one to sprint for and no one for in the general classification. They've done nothing all week and then they ride their asses off. For what? It makes no sense," said Garmin director sportif Johnny Welz, at the finish. As they headed passed the 15 kilometre to go banner it was all over but with ISD happy to sit-up, Oscar Pujol (Cervélo TestTeam) and Juan José Cobo (Fuji-Survetto) slipped clear. The pair didn't last long, with the sprinters' teams gathering at the front. They led the bunch and with a sharp left-hander going into the final 250 metres a sprint was inevitable. Gavazzi peeled off Belletti's wheel but with Clerc holding the centre and Sutton edging through with one final push on the far side, both the Australian and Italian were left lifting their arms in victory. After a seemingly endless wait Gavazzi was awarded the win. "My teammates had done a lot and with 40 kilometres to go we realised the breakaway was not far away. Since I was feeling good my teammates wanted to make one final effort to come to a bunch sprint finish," said the stage winner. "I was a bit tired and I made a mistake during the sprint, that's why it was so tight. It's the fourth stage [win] for me and I will think about tomorrow, however the main goal will be to bring the yellow jersey to the final win, but that also means to keep the bunch together and that means I will try again to win tomorrow. But for now we are very happy with what we have and we will see what happens tomorrow." Tomorrow's final stage will see the riders take part in a 80.4-kilometre criterium in Kuala Lumpur.
