14th Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 9-15, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - February 13: Petaling Jaya - Genting Highlands, 102 kmSerpa's roar to Genting victoryBy Daniel Benson in Genting Highlands, Malaysia José Serpa stole the show on stage five of the Tour of Langkawi with a solo attack that earned the Colombian the stage win and yellow jersey. On a day that saw a complete overhaul of the race lead, Serpa's Diquigiovanni-Androni team stamped its authority on the race once again, but not without resistance from Australia's Jai Crawford, who finished second on the stage and now sits second overall, 23 seconds in arrears. "I'm very happy, I had everything I needed to be able to win in Genting today,” said Serpa. “This year I'm in a good condition," said Serpa. The race began from Petaling Jaya and headed north for the 102 kilometre stage. It would culminate with the 1679-metre climb up to Genting. After numerous failed breaks, Daniele Nardello (Fuji-Servetto) and Marcel Wyss (Cervélo TestTeam) managed to slip away from the field after 30 kilometres. The pair shared the work on the flat roads through Gombak and Kepong, building a lead of over four minutes before reaching the first unclassified climb preceding Genting. "I wanted to get away so I could help my team and being in a break with someone like Nardello helped as he has so much experience," said Wyss. "I was just there to help set up my leaders for the climb." With 40 kilometres to go, the stage was set for the overall contenders to move their teams into place for the final assault up to Genting. They duly obliged, with Garmin-Slipstream and the Australian national team positioning their domestiques at the front. The intense pace quickly destroyed the peloton, with rider after rider slipping back. "At that point it was looking good. I had a teammate up the road and was feeling like I had the legs," said Cervélo's Dan Fleeman. With 20 kilometres to go and the bunch a further 2:20 back, Nardello lost contact with Wyss. For a brief moment it looked like the Swiss youngster was about to pull off a surprise win, but an untimely puncture disrupted his rhythm and he was forced to watch as the evergreen Nardello lurched passed to lead the race once more. Into the final 20 kilometres and with Garmin still pulling strongly on the front, Cameron Wurf (Australia) moved to the front and cranked up the pace. He dropped half the field – including José Angel Gomez Marchante (Cervélo TestTeam) – and left a small group containing Serpa, Jackson Rodriguez, Carlos José Ochoa (Diquigiovanni), Jai Crawford (Australia), Johann Tschopp, Janse Van Rensburg (South Africa), Fleeman (Cervélo), Julien Loubet (AG2R La Mondiale), Fredrik Kessiakoff (Fuji-Servetto), Lucas Euser (Garmin-Slipstream) and an exhausted Nardello hanging on. With the field strung out and Wurf close to breaking point, Diquigiovanni-Androni sensed its moment and Serpa motioned for Rodriguez to accelerate. The Venezuelan instantly went clear, but Serpa wasn't about to see his chance of glory disappear and immediately bridged the move with Fleeman in hot pursuit. The Brit briefly made contact, but quickly found the pace too hot. Euser and Van Rensburg went the same way – the former weaving from side to side as he tried to limit his losses. With a Diquigiovanni-Androni one-two looking ever-likely, Crawford set off in pursuit. He passed the flagging Fleeman, but had Ochoa glued to his wheel. Out-numbered and out-gunned the Australian could only watch as the threesome took it in turns to attack him. "I didn't expect to have three Diquigiovanni-Androni guys there with me. It was tough because if one would attack I couldn't really go flat out because I'd crack. ... It wasn't much fun, it was painful," said Crawford. After responding to several attacks, Crawford could only watch as Serpa made his wining move with five kilometres to go. The Colombian rapidly opened a 15-second lead. His two teammates marked the Australian, but with three kilometres to race and victory almost assured, Crawford dropped his two chaperones and reduced Serpa's lead by six seconds. He was on a 'do or die' mission to catch Serpa. Serpa wasn't finished yet. Gianni Savio giving his rider time checks from the car; Serpa kicked again in the closing metres to take his first stage of the race – his third win at Genting in four years – and the lead in the overall by 23 seconds from Crawford. Further down the climb Tschopp and Kessiakoff clawed their way up in tandem. The Swede broke clear in the last few kilometres. In his first race since switching from mountain biking, it was an impressive performance. The headlines went to Serpa though. "For me José Serpa is the lion of Bucaramanga, his home town in Colombia," said Savio. "Last year the lion was sleeping during the race so he was not in the break away. This year the lion woke up."
