14th Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 9-15, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - February 12: Melaka - Bangi, 221kmSamai storm ruins Gavazzi's paradeBy Daniel Benson in Bangi, Langkawi Indonesian sprinter Samai took his country's first win on stage four of the Tour of Langkawi, 221 kilometres from Melaka to Bandar Baru Bangi. The pint-sized Letua rider crossed the line ahead of general classification leader Mattia Gavazzi (Diquigiovanni-Androni) and Nolan Hoffman (South Africa). Gavazzi extended his lead to 23 seconds over Hoffman and will lead the race in tomorrow's blockbuster stage to Genting Highlands. "I think that this is the best day for me in the Tour of Langkawi this year and my career. I've been here for one month training, so I wanted to prove that I'm the best in Asia here. I think I've done that here today," Samai said. Samai, 28, capped a superb day for Asian cycling, with five of the day's break coming from the continent. His Letua teammate, New Zealander Jeremy Yates, took the lead in the mountains competition. The race's longest stage travelled from the centre of Melaka, along the coast until and then inland towards the first tough test of the race. There were two categorised climbs before a long descent to the finish. The day began in typical Langkawi fashion with riders trying to escape the bunch right from the gun. A determined Diquigiovanni-Androni train hampered any break's chances until kilometre 50, where Gavazzi bagged points at the first intermediate sprint. An eight-man break containing Yukiya Arashiro, René Weissinger, Shinichi Fukushima, Hyoen Gu Kim, Jeremy Yates, Mustafa Rusli, Christoff Van Heerden and Serjii Matveyev moved off the front. The group gathered pace as it built up a lead over the undulating coastal route. In the main group Cervélo Test Team and the Australian National squad watched each other at the head. As the break gained time – peaking at six minutes before the first climb of the day – the stage was excitingly poised. At the front, Yates was burying himself as he tried to sweep up mountain points on the first climb of Bukit Tangga. He was closely followed by South Africa's Van Heerden. Back in the bunch, riders were starting to wilt under the pressure of the climbs. The lead held at six minutes as the leaders descended at over 90kmh. Timothy Duggan (Garmin-Slipstream) showed his intent with two small digs from the peloton, but his attacks were quickly neutralised. The bunch was finally set on organising a chase and the lead quickly tumbled on the category two climb to Genting Peres. The leaders were beginning to slow. As they reached the one kilometre to go banner, Yates and Van Heerden found themselves with a 15-second lead over the remnants of the break. Julien Loubet (AG2R La Mondiale) launched an attack from the bunch that saw him make contact with the leaders on the descent. "I had to try something. I wanted to break things up as much as I could for our other climbers and I was willing to sacrifice myself for the team," the Frenchman said at the finish. On the long descent Yates and Van Heerden fought to extend their advantage. The bunch crested the climb just over a minute in arrears, but with a gasping Gavazzi and many of the sprinters still gripping on. "I wasn't the best climber, but I was able to get away at the top. We just buried ourselves hoping we could stay away but the peloton were pulling so hard," Van Heerden said. With four kilometres to go and the remnants of the break back in the peloton, the exposed roads began sapping at the duo's legs and it was only a matter of time before the race was back together again. Gavazzi, the winner of the previous three stages had it all in his favour as he swung to the middle of the road in the final 150 metres. However, a crash that took out Chris Sutton (Garmin-Slipstream) caused the Italian to hesitate and it gave Samai the perfect opportunity to dive home for the biggest win of his career. "Coming up to the finish I had a great position. I was sitting third wheel and I thought 'oh, I've got this one.' Some guys came around the right and a couple on the left, so I made my move. Then someone came from the left and straight to the right – taking out my front wheel. I just went down," said a battered Sutton. Gavazzi was gracious in defeat: "I have to congratulate Samai on his win – he took is chance well. There was hesitation, and then there was a hole behind me and one rider came from this hole – that's how I lost the race." Tomorrow the riders tackle the daunting stage from Petaling Jaya to Genting Highlands. Only 102km in length, its finish at Genting – 1679 metres above sea-level – will see the overall contenders go head-to-head for the first time.
