14th Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 9-15, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - February 10: Senawang - Melaka, 160.9 kmGalloping Gavazzi grabs win twoBy Daniel Benson in Melaka Mattia Gavazzi stormed to his second win at the Tour of Langkawi on stage two from Senawang to Melaka. The race leader repeated his stage-one winning antics with a frantic dash to the line ahead of Nolan Hoffman (South Africa) and Aurélien Clerc (AG2R La Mondiale). A tired looking Gavazzi was delighted with his win. "I had a look at the race manual last night and I knew what to expect in the last kilometre or two. There were uneven paving stones and a few sharp bends to watch out for but nothing dangerous and I had great support from [teammate] Manuel Belletti and it made my sprint easier," the Italian said. After a relatively easy first day all 119 riders rolled out from Senawang for the 160.9km stage to Melaka, and like yesterday a flurry of early attacks from the national teams marked the beginning kilometres. None of the escapees was granted much freedom from the chasing bunch but once the peloton crested the stage's category three climb up to Bukit Inas, a two-man break formed. Two of the race's strongest teams began to show themselves, with Cervélo TestTeam's Oscar Pujol and AG2R's Moldovan national champion Alexandr Pliuschin pulling clear. On the winding, rural roads the two worked well, sharing the pace and bonus points on offer as a small group tried an unsuccessful attempt to bridge across. At the 50km mark the duo had built up a steady 2:30 lead and as they moved deeper into the local picture-postcard countryside, they stretched their advantage out to a maximum of 7:10 at 83km. This brought the peloton back into life and on the flat roads leading into Tampin Gavazzi's Diquigionvanni-Androni squad moved to the front and began to organise a chase. With help eventually coming from Garmin Slipstream and CSF Group Navigare the break began to lose time as their advantage started to crumble in the sweltering condition. Sprinters dash break's dreamWith 10km to go the gap dipped below one minute for the first time, as the race hit the the outskirts of Maleka and finally the group was reeled in within the final four kilometres. "It was my plan to get into the break even though I tried yesterday from 15 kilometres out," Pliuschin told Cyclingnews at the finish. "We wanted more riders with us but we worked well together and communicated with each other. Yeah, I'm deflated. I really thought we'd make it right up until the bunch surrounded us," said the 22-year-old. With the escape over the sprinters' teams swarmed to the head of the field and it came down to another sprint showdown on the uneven paving stones that lined the last kilometre, with Gavazzi slicing through the middle of the field and taking his second stage of the race and third win of the year. South Africa's Nolan Hoffman finished second and was left reeling after another near miss: "Coming into the last kilometre and a half I thought I was in with a chance but I was flicked off Gavazzi's wheel in the last bend and trying to recover was too difficult. I can't believe I even kept the bike up in the finishing straight. My legs were good but not good enough to beat Gavazzi. He's just got something we don't have in the final dash. Third yesterday, and second day, I've still got my eyes on the top of the podium for tomorrow." Once again the day belonged to the Italian. "A win in Argentina and two here, what can I say? My next race is the Tour of Sardinia but my dream is to do well at Tirreno-Adratico. We're here for more stage wins though, but it will be difficult to control every day like we did today." But again the last word went to Gavazzi's team director Gianni Savio. "For forty kilometres we worked very, very hard. Roldopho Serpa pulled all day for us. Why did we win? We won because we're such a close knit team and I'm so happy we've picked up our second stage in two days." Gavazzi leads the overall standing by ten seconds from Nolan Hoffan, with Alexandr Pliuschin a further second back in third. Tomorrow's stage will see the riders head south into the state of Jahor for an undulating 186km.
