14th Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 9-15, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 7 - February 15: KL Criterium, 80.4 kmGene in a bottle, Serpa gets his wishBy Daniel Benson in Kuala Lumpur Yohann Gene came up trumps on the final stage of the Tour of Langkawi, an 80.4-kilometre criterium in the centre of Kuala Lumpur, beating Guiellermo Bongiorno and Mattia Gavazzi and taking his first professional win. On a day that saw JosJoseeacute; Serpa wrap up the overall, it was another chance for the sprinters to shine and with Diguivioanni-Androni intent on keeping the bunch together, the stage was set for sprint showdown. However leading the bunch for the entire stage backfired and with the Italian squad tiring and unable to provide a lead-out launch for Gavazzi, Gene dashed through to take the first win in the race for a ProTour team and the first of his five-year career. The Guadeloupe rider was delighted and said after he crossed the line, "It's true that I've been waiting a long time for this. Five years as a pro and I've finally done it. All these sprints are difficult but if you find the right timing you can win. That's what happened to me." Many of the ProTour teams have been ominously missing from the results this week but today's winner said he'd been waiting in the wings. "The team didn't come with a pure sprinter and our priority was to protect Tschoop for the mountains but today I had my chance and I took it." Diquigiovanni-Androni set the pace early on and with the help of the entire ISD squad, chased down almost every attack. Garmin's Ricardo Van Der Velde managed to escape their clutches but was brought back halfway through the race. "What's on my back? It's a race number and when I've got one I'm going to use it. They were giving me shit for attacking but it was annoying me that they were controlling the bunch to such a degree. What you saw there was pure frustration," the Dutchman said. With the only other dissent coming from Australia, who were setting up Gene Bates at each individual sprint, it was left to the Diguivioanni-Androni and ISD axis to lead the bunch into the final kilometre. "I've tried many times to attack in the final 500 metres but each day I've been pulled back, but today I waited and I took the win. I couldn't believe it. It means so much for me, the team and Guadeloupe. Cycling is bigger than soccer back home," Gene said. But this race has really been about one team. Diquigiovanni dominated through a combination of strength, experience and tactics, bagging five stages, the overall, points and mountains jersey and the team classification. "I have come close to winning this race before. It was the third time I've won at Genting Highlands but to finish with the yellow jersey means more than that," said Serpa as he celebrated, the Venezuelan flag draped around his shoulders. "I'll be there in the Giro and I'll have this to build my confidence." For the team manager, Gianni Savio, it was his fourth win in the race. "I like Malaysia and I like Langkawi and I've always come here with passion. That's why Mattia and José have done so well. I didn't expect all of this but it's a wonderful achievement for the team."
