14th Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 9-15, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - February 11: Melaka - Melaka, 186 kmGavazzi scores hattrick of winsBy Daniel Benson in Melaka, Langkawi It was Groundhog Day on stage three of the Tour of Langkawi as Italian sprinter Mattia Gavazzi swept his third win in as many days. In a carbon-copy of stage one and two, Gavazzi and his Diquigiovanni-Androni squad allowed a small group to escape in the opening kilometres, only for the bunch to regroup and the race leader to leave his rivals a clean pair of heels at the finish. "This is my team's victory not just mine. We worked from start to finish and I wouldn't have been on the podium today without them," Gavazzi said at the finish. The sprinter is the first rider to win three stages in a row at Langkawi since Alberto Loddo in 2007. In blistering heat riders headed south of Melaka on a 186km round trip. Once again, the attacks came thick and fast from the Asian teams. However, it was Garmin's Ricardo Van Der Velde who broke clear with Ali Ahmed (Malaysia National Team) and Kyu Seok Suh (Seoul Cycling) quickly in tow. "It was a joke," Van Der Velde said at the finish. "I didn't really think I'd get away, but when I turned around I had a gap. I guess the bunch weren't too interested in me and when the two guys made it across I knew we were going to be the break of the day." The threesome quickly built up a lead in the opening kilometres along the flat carriageways towards Muar. "I was trying to make sure we had a steady rhythm, but the others were going too hard and too quickly. I kept telling them to take it easy and that we'd have more chance if we just built the lead steadily," Van Der Velde told Cyclingnews. Back in the Garmin-Slipstream team car, director sportif Johnny Weltz was trying to ensure his rider wasn't doing too much of the work. "We wanted to ease the pressure on the rest of our team because the next two days are going to be much harder. Having Ricardo up the road helped us. I wanted him to make sure he was only doing the same amount of work as the others." As the race moved further into the rolling countryside and on its loop back to Melaka, the peloton began to take responsibility for the chase. Gavazzi's team pulled on the front. "I thought the pace wasn't particularly fast. I've done harder recovery rides but when we started to chase there was a noticeably difference," said Cervélo's Dan Fleeman. But as the escape peaked at 8:35, the peloton began to up the pace. "We were working well together," Van Der Velde said, "but when the Malaysian guy popped off the back me and the Seoul rider knew that our time was almost up." The pack finally swooped for its prey with 15 kilometres to go, on the outskirts of Melaka. Current leader of the Asian rider classification, Dmitriy Gruzdev immediately attacked. The Kazakh, who many pundits are tipping as a future star used his brute strength to pull clear but with just a handful of seconds over the pack his time in front was over quickly. As the riders headed into the finishing straight the almost inevitable – and by now repetitive – sight unfolded as Gavazzi ripped through the field to collect his third stage win. Runner-up Chris Sutton was left disappointed after another second place, but the Australian was full of praise for his sprinting rival. "We just went back to basics and I nearly pulled it off. I got a bit of a clean run in the sprint, but I just haven't quiet got that bit of zap. Mattia is pretty quick but given my day I know I can roll him. I suppose you can say the best bike rider on the day won, again." For the third stage in a row the final word went to Diquigiovanni Team Manager Gianni Savio. "Today was a sprint but tomorrow it could be totally different. We could perhaps see Mattia repay the work his team have done for him and pull for someone like Serpa on the climbs. We will see tonight after I talk to my team." Tomorrow the riders face their first testing stage of the race. They will tackle two category climbs on a 221km stage from Melaka to Bandar Bar Bangi.
