14th Le Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 9-15, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Next Stage Stage 1 - February 9: Putrajaya - Senawang, 133.8 kmGavazzi sprints to Langkawi leadBy Daniel Benson in Senawang Mattia Gavazzi won the opening stage of the 2008 Tour of Langkawi from Putrajaya to Senawang ahead of Chris Sutton (Garmin-Slipstream) and Nolan Hoffman (Australian National Team). The Diquigionvanni-Androni rider from Iseo, Italy, sprinted to his second win in as many months, after taking the opening stage of the Tour de San Luis in January. "Each victory is nice, especially as I wasn't meant to start the season in such good form. In Argentina I won after very little preparation but coming here I had a clear goal to aim for and thought about winning a lot more. We knew as a team that if we kept the race together I had a good chance. When I looked around and saw two or three teammates with me in the final kilometres, I knew I was in with a shout of victory," he said. After building his form at the Tour Down Under, Chris Sutton (Garmin-Slipsteam) sprinted to second place but was left disappointed. "The last hundred metres were pretty dangerous. There's not a strong enough team here to just hit the front and line it out, so it bunched up a bit and people were hitting wheels. I was sitting behind Aurélien Clerc, and he went to jump on the pedals and just snapped his chain so I had to come around. With 200m to go I got a clear run and I started running at him [ed – Gavazzi], but I left it a bit too late. I was probably in too big of a gear." A trio on the frontEarlier in the morning 119 riders set out on the 133.8km stage under hot and humid conditions for a relatively flat opening to the seven-day stage race. However, the pace was break-neck from the start with attack after attack launching off the front. First to try his luck was Adam Semple (Australian National Team) but the 19-year-old was quickly caught and passed by the Fuji Servetto's José Juan Cobo. By kilometre 28 the peloton was back together but a short lull in the pace allowed Mohd Akmal Amrun (MNCF Cycling Team), Dmitriy Gruzdev (Kazakhstan National Team) and Jaco Venter (South African National Team) to escape from the bunch. The trio worked well together in the hot conditions, sharing the points at sprint bonuses and building up a steady lead that peaked at five minutes before the stage's only climb up to Bukit Puyoh. By kilometre 60 the break began to tire as the peloton, led by the Malaysian National Team and Diquigionvanni-Androni, started to chase. With the lead dipping under four minutes the peloton could smell blood with more teams joining the pursuit. With 30 kilometres to go it was all over and the bunch was together again. Harmony didn't last as rider after rider tried to escape the clutches of the speeding peloton. Few succeeded until Johann Tschopp (Bbox Bouygues Telecom) stretched out a handful of seconds. But the peloton wasn't in the mood and caught the Swiss rider with 15 kilometres still to go. A four-man group containing Moldovan Alexandr Pliuschin (AG2R La Mondiale) broke clear in the final kilometres but its fate was sealed when the bunch swooped in and Gavazzi steamed past his lead-out man Manuel Belletti, to take his second win of the year. Gavazzi will wear the leader's yellow jersey for tomorrow's stage from Senawang to Melaka, but it's not a lead his Director Sportif Gianni Savio is keen to defend. "We worked very hard today but we can't work like that everyday and we don't want to use all our riders before the stage to Genting, as that's where we'll have our best chance of overall victory in Luca Celli. "I would like to congratulate Gavazzi though. When I took him the view in Italy was that he was a little crazy but he is very professional for someone so young. And he's certainly capable of some big results in the future." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Shane Goss/www.licoricegallery.com
