Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 14-22, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - February 18: Merced - Clovis, 187.7 km/115.4 miCavendish back on top in ClovisSun finally smiles on California pelotonBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in Clovis, California The Tour of California finished in its second consecutive bunch sprint, and Mark Cavendish was today's beneficiary. The Manxman gave Columbia-Highroad its first victory in California with a long dash to the line after the 187.7 km journey over the Sierra Nevada foothills to Clovis. It wasn't plain sailing however; Cavendish was nearly pipped on the line by a fast-charging Tom Boonen (Quick Step) but held on to take the win, with Juan José Haedo (Saxo Bank) in third. "It's massive for us and for the team," Cavendish said about the win. "The team did so well today. They stayed with me on the climbs and with a flat run in like that there was only one outcome that it could have been... when you have a team like mine. "We got the lead out right - straight past the Cervélo team - and we saw how strong they were yesterday. But when they [Cavendish's teammates] drop me off with 100 metres to go, there could only be one outcome!" Cavendish came to California with a bit of a chip on his shoulder after last year's race, where he had a sprint win taken from his grasp. The first sprint finish on Tuesday didn't work out for his team. "I thought I won one last year and it [was not] given to me, [so] I had to win one this year but it didnt work out yesterday." Cavendish was almost denied today's win by celebrating a bit early, however. Tom Boonen (Quick Step) threw his bike on the line as the Columbia sprinter was already raising his arms in the air. It was a a la Erik Zabel in the 2004 Milan-Sanremo, although this time the spoils went to the man who pre-empted line honours. According to Cavendish, the result was somewhat of a bonus given the parcours. "To be honest, with the climbs I wasnt planning on getting anywhere near the finish in the front," he explained. "But I always make sure I know the final few kilometres and it paid off today. I always had three or four guys with me on the climbs and it improved my morale to get over the ascents. When I got over the last climb I knew I had a chance." Race leader Levi Leipheimer (Astana) had an easier day defending his golden jersey - albeit later in the race - with agreeable weather and the sprinters' teams more interested in bringing the break back after the final KOM. He even had time to enjoy the race's first foray into the Sierra Nevada mountains. "I think the road course scenery was awesome," he said. "I took the chance to look around a couple of times... it was beautiful! To be in the Sierras, it is very pretty. There was a tonne of people out in the snow cheering for us. It's great that the Tour of California can come to new places and spread the word." The pressure was still on Astana's captain early in the race though, with a lot of riders trying to get into the main break and his team trying to keep tabs on any threats. "Everyone came out with their guns blazing, the peloton was in pieces at some moments," Leipheimer explained. "We had to chase down some breaks with threatening riders in them. The team was strong and Lance went to the front and brought back a lot of those breaks. The course profile was high up in the Sierras with snow everywhere... that made for a hard race for the first hour and half!" Having ridden in support of Leipheimer, Armstrong concurred about the difficulty of the first half of the day. "It was a hard race, because in the beginning guys were aggressive and wanted to get away to get a break going. They made our lives tough on the first couple of climbs and so we had to ride quite a bit. Not an easy day - fast coming home, but all-in-all pretty tough." Leipheimer's closest threats are Australian Michael Rogers (Columbia-High Road) and US time trial champion Dave Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream), who sit 24 and 28 seconds down respectively. "I can't predict the future but as long as I'm feeling the way I have been and ride the way I've been riding, it will be very difficult for him [Rogers]. And Zabriskie is the US champion... anything is possible." Picturesque California (finally!)The mountainous stage passed over the Sierra Nevada range, with five KOM bonuses and two sprint bonuses. The first attack of the day came at about three metres after the neutral section ended. Eventually Serge Pauwels (Cervélo TestTeam), Jason McCartney (Saxo Bank), US champion Tyler Hamilton and Francisco Mancebo (Rock Racing) escaped before the first mountain. After only building a small lead, Mancebo's standing overall saw him ordered back to the peloton to allow the break to survive for the day, although he had already gathered enough KOM and sprint points to retain both jerseys for the stage. "Our main objective was to get the KOM jersey or make sure guys got up the road to suck up the points," said Hamilton. "I saw Paco [Mancebo] coming up so I waited for him and brought him up to the group. He won the first two KOMs and we figured that if our break was going to be successful, Paco had to go back to the peloton. We achieved our goal, with him hanging onto the KOM... but we [the break] couldn't make the break last." "I'm dissappointed; every kilometre I was out there I believed we could stay away," said Hamilton. "I knew the sprinters' teams would eventually put on a chase. McCartney was very strong and a great rider to have in the break like that." The trio lasted until three kilometres to go, when the Cervélo train came chugging by as it towed Thor Hushovd to a possible second stage win. But a final-kilometre attack from a Rabobank rider, Pedro Horrillo, disrupted the lead-out, allowing Columbia to put Cavendish in position to launch his sprint. The day was once again marred by crashes, the worst of which took out Rabobank's star sprinter, Oscar Freire, and Columbia-Highroad's Kim Kirchen. BMC's Scott Nydam abandoned the race after crashing in a separate incident later in the race. Additional reporting from Sue George. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here
