Tour of California - 2.HCUSA, February 14-22, 2009Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Next Stage Prologue - February 14: Sacramento (ITT), 3.9 km/2.4 miCancellara tops in California capitalBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor with Kirsten Robbins in Sacramento, California For the second year-in-a-row Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) has come to the Tour of California and opened up with a prologue win, covering the short but technical 3.9 km course around California's capital at just over 50 km/h. But right behind him was California's favorite cycling son and two-time defending race champion, Levi Leipheimer (Astana) who was off of the former world time trial champion by just 1.2 seconds with American time trial champion Dave Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream) in third, at 2.7 seconds down. "I'm so happy... it is a great way to start the first race of the year," Cancellara said. "There was a beautiful crowd and that is for sure a good motivation. Again it is a great race and to have the energy that I did to win in the way that I won today, in the way that I won last year, in front of Levi....sorry Levi!" Leipheimer was also thankful for the thousands of people that lined the entire course, cheering every rider on – and he was not too worried to be behind Cancellara again this year. "The crowd was awesome," said Leipheimer. "Bigger and better every year so it's great to see that. Fabian is really tough to beat especially in a prologue, and so to be 1.2 seconds behind, I'm very happy with that. We are in the perfect situation." "I think I'm right on track and I definitely have the form to compete for the win," Leipheimer continued. "It's not to say that I can win because the competition is extremely good and a lot can happen in the next eight days." The Astana team got its strongest challenge from Columbia-Highroad, who had the most riders in the top-ten with three, including Michael Rogers in fourth. Sprinter Mark Cavendish finished in eleventh, and is poised to contend for the yellow jersey over the next few stages with just under a five second defecit to Cancellara. Leipheimer said that although the race is laid out differently than in the previous three years, he still thinks the time trial in Solvang is still the key to the overall. "On paper it still looks like the most important stage. But you never know what could happen, something could tactically happen that changes the race. But we know that Solvang will make a difference, so to me it is the most important stage. After today I feel very confident because I am only 62kg and to be so close to Fabian I think it is a good sign." The three riders were asked how they feel about starting with the short but explosive prologue, to which Zabriskie and Leipheimer seemed to switch roles. Usually Leipheimer has a serious, measured comment while Zabriskie is ready with a short, witty retort. Zabriskie said, "It's a nice way to open up a race – it's good for the crowds. I think we'll get more opened up tomorrow but it's not like we are disappointed, feeling blocked up sitting here." Leipheimer quipped, "I'd say it's a lot like having a difibrulator... CLEAR!" Another question for the riders was the very non-California weather expected for the entire race. Today's high was 52° F with strong winds. Days of cold and rain are expected for the rest of the race. "I think we have all been professionals for a long time and have bad days on the bike," said Leipheimer. "We know what it's like and you have to be prepared – most importantly in your head – and be ready for the worst. That issue was also a concern for Cancellara in how he expects to defend his leader's jersey. "It depends on the weather forecast because we might find some snow. But I am prepared and we know what we have to do." "We are going to decide tomorrow morning about how we are going to race," Cancellara continued. "We have a good team here, very strong. Going for the overall is a possibility but we also have the possibility to go for the sprint with JJ Haedo. Now we will see. Everyone wants to win in the end but we know we are ready. With eight days, it is great but it is a long stage race. We have to do good tactics and I think that is what will decide the race." Another name making it high on the result list was a certain Lance Armstrong (Astana) who posted a top-ten place at 4.3 seconds behind. Levi was asked how the recent retiree approached the day. "I think he is kinda like a neo-pro. He is really excited. You can see he is really paying attention to details, he is not just going through the motions. He has that fire to race – it's there, definitely." Also returning to professional racing with this race was the first winner of this race Floyd Landis (OUCH-Maxxis). However his result was less impressive at 90th, 20 seconds back, possibly impacted by his crash in training yesterday. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here
