Mancebo 'never surrendered'

Race radio issues affect GC chase

On a brutally cold and constantly wet day, Spaniard Francesco Mancebo (Rock Racing) stunned the entire Tour of California by attacking early and then staying clear of the chasing favorites to win the first stage and take over the leader's yellow jersey.

"When I attacked I wanted to make the riding hard and keep going to stay warm," said Mancebo. "Slowly, after every kilometre, I started to feel more confident that I may be able to stay away. With five kilometers before the finish I just wanted to give up and quit." At this point Mancebo was joined by two riders from the main chase group closing in behind him - Jurgen van de Walle (Quick Step) and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas).

"I thought that I was going to have to suffer alone and the world was coming upon me. I kept on going and I didn’t think that I was going to make it but in the end I did," he added. "I felt the pressure of getting win and the field behind. When we were close the finish, I stayed behind the other two riders and I took off close to the line and I came in ahead."

Mancebo was joined earlier in the stage by two other riders, Tim Johnson (OUCH-Maxxis) and David Kemp (Fly V-Australia). However, it took a while as Mancebo never let up to wait for them. "He rode solo for like 30km at the beginning, which was totally goofy," Johnson told Cyclingnews. "I don't know why he didn't wait."

"Then we rode with him for about 50km. On the second KOM he let me pull a little and then totally smashed it on the big ring and left us for dead. That was impressive."

Johnson, the rider usually tasked with suffering in the breaks, enjoyed the extra work as it kept him warm. "That was pretty helpful! I dressed for a lot of action today, so that paid off. I only had a rain jacket on, but I was sweating today compared to my teammates in the back!"

Earlier in the stage the peloton was shocked when the yellow jersey retired from the race. Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank), suffering with a fever and sore throat, abandoned in the feed zone. Consequently, the pace-making responsibility floated around a little, with most teams looking to defending race winner Levi Leipheimer's Astana team. But poor race communication hindered the team's mounting of an organised chase.

"It was just really bad communication, we didn't know any of the time gaps," said Leipheimer. "At the end it was Chris Horner... we have to really thank him, because he was the one to be really astute and hit the gas. We started panicking and tried to ask the other teams to help, and they didn't get it! They asked, 'Why should we help?' And we were like, 'Mancebo has five minutes!' But nobody knew anything."

Astana's directeur sportif Johan Bruyneel was not happy with the officials nor the quality of the race communications. "Radio Tour was definitely an issue," he told Cyclingnews. "Information came slow and incorrect. It was already very far in the race that we were informed that the three leaders were not together! It was very confusing."

Another issue was a debate amongst the commisaires and the race organisers as to when to 'count' the finish in terms of GC placing and time. Because of a crash two years ago on the same finish circuits in Santa Rosa, organisers were planning on counting the GC on the finish line with one lap remaining, then have the race finish out for stage placing. But then on the road it was changed to the first time the racers crossed the finish line, with three laps to go. This affected the amount of kilometers left to chase down Mancebo and hence limit the losses on GC time.

"Early in the race I went to ask the chief commissaire what the time situation was at the finish, and then when we got over the climb and started chasing she said that the first time we passed the finish line [would be the GC time,] so all of a sudden we had only 15 kilometres to chase," added Bruyneel.

For Mancebo, this win justifies his decision to race for a US domestic team. "I had not won a race for a long time. This was my first race so I had to keep going," he said. "For me, this win is very important and of course for my team too. This is a home win and the most important one at the biggest race. We wanted to start off this stage race and this season by winning to keep the confidence high - I am very happy to have the yellow jersey and we are going to keep going with it."

How it unfolded

Francisco Mancebo (Rock Racing) attacked the field a few kilometres after the neutral section concluded, and rode the first KOM alone. He was eventually joined by OUCH Pro Cycling's Tim Johnson and David Kemp (Fly V Australia) after 32 miles of racing. The three riders built up a maximum advantage of 12 minutes on the peloton, as news came that the morning's leader, Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) had dropped out during the stage after suffering from a fever.

The peloton began to pick up the pace as the leaders headed up the category two climb of Howell Mountain Road, but with 45 miles remaining, Mancebo left his two companions behind on on the climb and never looked back. Johnson and Kemp were absorbed on the descent by an elite group of favourites which had split from the peloton on the ascent.

That group contained last year's winner Levi Leipheimer and his teammates Lance Armstrong, Christopher Horner and José Luis Rubiera. Also included were the Saxo Bank duo Andy Schleck and Jens Voigt, Thomas Lövkvist and Michael Rogers (Team Columbia - Highroad), David Zabriskie (Garmin - Slipstream), Kevin Seeldraeyers and Walle Jurgen Van De (Quick Step), Robert Gesink and Bauke Mollema (Rabobank), Ivan Basso (Liquigas), Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas), Floyd Landis, Rory Sutherland and Jonathan Patrick McCarty (OUCH p/b Maxxis) and Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing).

This group managed to pull the lone leader back to a five minute advantage on the final climb, but by the time Mancebo entered the finishing circuits with 10 miles to go, he still enjoyed a three minute lead on the group and the peloton had not closed in to help the chase.

The group, led mainly by Armstrong, pulled Mancebo back to a minute over the next two circuits, but an attack by Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) and Jurgen Van de Walle (Quick Step) disrupted the chase. The two riders bridged up to the leader on the final circuit, but Mancebo still found enough strength to use the short uphill leading to the finish to distance his companions and win the stage.

The chase group of Leipheimer finished nearly two minutes in arrears, a rather unexpected result for last year's overall winner, while the main peloton finished more than five minutes behind.
