Barry ends stage win drought in Rolla

Vande Velde in lead despite Columbia's relentless pressure

To say that race leader Christian Vande Velde and his Garmin-Chipotle team were tested today would be an understatement. Team Columbia came out swinging from the gun today and every swing was for the fences, as they tried to break the back of Vande Velde. But the Midwest-native did the yellow jersey proud today, keeping his wits about him and using his team's efforts to shut down the dangerous moves. But Columbia did continue its stage win route, with Canadian Michael Barry attacking Jeff Louder (BMC) out of the lead group for a solo win - his first win in three years.

"I just kept pushing until the finish because I don't always trust what the officials are saying for times," he said referring to the gaps behind him. "Once [Louder and I] were on the circuits I had a better chance to open a gap because it is harder to close on circuits than on open roads. I just watched my power meter and try to focus on the guys coming up behind and stay focused on finishing."

Barry was part of a 'kitchen sink' team tactic today, sending every rider up the road to isolate Vande Velde. Then it was dangerous GC riders like Michael Rogers and George Hincapie putting the screws to the yellow jersey. "We started attacking straight from the start to try and narrow down the numbers until we had more riders than them in the front group," said Barry. "Then we started attacking at the end when there was no one left to chase. Everyone was on the limit and our guys were doing a tremendous job. There were rollers everywhere and the peloton was suffering a lot. We were in a good position to split things up."

But once it was clear that Garmin-Chipotle had the jersey secure, about 25km from the finish, team director Tristan Hoffman said he told Barry to ride for the stage win. "I won a race 2 or 3 years ago at the Tour of Austria," Barry said about his last win.

"It was hard; it was a really hard day!" Vande Velde told Cyclingnews. "Everyone threw it all at us today and the team did a great job covering and shutting it down. We were worried a lot today. Michael [Rogers] got up the road twice and it was hard shutting all the attacks down, but we showed patience today."

Today was the first day with any significant KOM climbs, though relative to European climbs they were still minor. But they still hurt due to the constant up-and-down terrain that preceded them, according to Vande Velde. "Two of them were hard, but it wasn't so much the actual climb but the racing before the climbs. The word of the day: relentless!"

The most difficult KOM was the final one at mile 64 (103km), a 1.5-mile stretch that averaged 12%. But this was the catalyst that split the field into pieces, with a group of 18 split off the front with Columbia driving the pace. This ended up being the race as the yellow jersey and all of the major contenders were present. Columbia had a distinct numbers advantage over Garmin-Chipotle with George Hincapie, Michael Barry, Marco Pinotti and Michael Rogers compared to just Vande Velde and Tom Danielson.

Vande Velde said it was all instinct at this point with everything happening so fast. But he and his teammate watched Rogers and Hincapie closely, and eventually team tactics played into their favor as other riders began itching for the stage win, looming just 25 miles away. Andy Bajadali (Kelly Benefits Strategies-Medifast) attacked the group and three riders went with him, including Barry, Louder and Richard Faltus (Team Sparkasse).

Barry was clearly the strongest in the group, but also had the advantage of having teammates behind, allowing him to sit-on. He tried to go solo early at 35km to go. However, the four stayed together a while longer with that distance a little long for a solo rider, with the remaining chasers at just over a minute behind. But with 25km to go, Barry attacked and only Louder could stay with him. "Michael sat on a little bit while Louder and I did a lot of work," said Bajadali. "[Barry] had the three other guys back in the chase. Michael counter-attacked one of my jumps and Louder went with him. [Faltus] didn't really want to put his head down to close the gap so we dangled 15 seconds in front of the field."

Barry and Louder rode together onto the finish circuits with Barry playing the team card for much of the way. "It wasn't an ideal situation for us because [Louder] was higher up on GC, so I worked with him a little bit and them I just sat on," Barry admitted. "I started working again when the gap wasn't as threatening. I was a little fresher at that point because I was sitting on him for a long time."

"I knew Barry was going to play tricky which was fair, he did what he had to do," Louder told Cyclingnews. "He wasn't about to drag me up the road for nothing, he spent me. There was a big group of us. Four of us jumped up the road and it ended up being the right move. Barry attacked once which disturbed our rotation... it was too early. He attacked again and I went with him. He worked for a little while but then it was just me working."

Louder was caught by the chasers on the finishing circuits, leaving a mini-field sprint for second. Sparkasse's Eric Baumann, giving him the sprint jersey by one point over its previous owner Mark Cavendish, took this. The two riders were teammates on Sparkasse and T-Mobile, with Baumann saying they still have a friendly rivalry.

In the KOM competition, Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United) held onto his lead, which he earned on day one. Rollin is more a sprinter by trade, giving perspective to the KOM climbs, said that a stage win is still the ultimate goal. "The KOM is great but we are still looking for a stage win. We have a good [KOM] lead so now we will focus more on a stage win with myself or Ivan [Dominguez.]"

After the final KOM, which fractured the field, Rollin was attentive enought to stay near the front and make the final split. The rest of the peloton came in 18:37 behind. This was actually outside the time cut by two minutes, but officials increased it to 10% so as not to have an 18-rider peloton for the next three days. "I think it was a crazy fast stage today with almost a 29 mph average!" said Rollin. "Everyone was on the attack making it a hard day. To see the field coming in ten minutes behind means it was a hard day on the bike."

But everyone knows that the hard days are far from over, including Vande Velde. "I'm sure it is going to be more of the same. The key strategy is to keep control of the race and not let anyone close on GC get away, dangerous guys like Mick Rogers who is sitting twenty second behind me and Hincapie and Tuft. Maybe we let some quasi-dangerous guys go and then the non-threatening guys stay at bay.

The racing began in the town (not country) of Lebanon for the second year, and like last year most of the town's school children were out to watch the racers... and avoid their studies. After a neutral loop through the town the race headed out into the country. Right at the 0km mark the attacks came, and kept coming. But it was not the opportunistic domestic teams looking for TV time like in the previous stages, it was Columbia firing every bullet to wound race leader Christian Vande Velde and his Garmin-Chipotle team.

Columbia's tactics were made clear when former race leader and top sprinter Mark Cavendish took a flyer off the front in the opening kilometres, clearly not looking to save his legs for a field sprint. The attacking was non-stop with Garmin-Chipotle on the front shutting dangerous moves down - which was just about every one.

Groups of five or six riders were constantly off the front, but never long enough to even see race numbers. This was the order of the day until the KOM climbs, where a few riders went for points, including KOM leader Dominique Rollin (Toyota-United), who won the first and third climbs.

It was on the final climb that the other racing finally changed. With Columbia driving the pace over the top a group of 18 split off the front of the strung-out peloton, including all of the major GC riders, including the top three of Vande Velde, Michael Rogers (Columbia) and Svein Tuft (Symmetrics.) This essentially became the peloton as the rest of the field sat-up, spent from the never-ending attacks at high pace.

Once this group took stock of its composition, BMC's Jeff Louder and Andy Bajadali (Kelly Benefits Strategies-Medifast) shook things up with attacks. This resulted in four riders away, with Barry and Faltus joining them.

Riders like Vande Velde were happy to see this go, as the pace eased-off considerably. The final four built a minute lead before beginning to think about attacking each other. It was Barry finally escaping with Louder, riding away to the finish circuits. On the finish circuits Barry had saved enough by making Louder do most of the work, and jumping him was easy for the solo win.
