Young Rabobanks show-up sprinters in Missouri

Vande Velde, team enjoy easier' day in yellow

After yesterday's slugfest between Columbia and Garmin-Chipotle that resulted in a 29mph average speed, riders were ready for another day of the same. And it did start that way until a 12 rider break formed, including former leader Mark Cavendish. The double stage winner took the sprint points on the road to take over the lead - but he was not able to quite find the legs for the uphill finish, as two young Rabobank riders surprised the field, with Boy van Poppel taking the win with his lead-out Michael Van Stayen holding off Keven Lacombe (Kelly Benefit Strategies - Medifast) for second.

"I didn't expect to be so close to the win," van Poppel told Cyclingnews. "In the last two kilometres one of my teammates went to the front. I told him go, go, go!' Coming into the last corner there were seven people and with three hundred meters one went. I went with him but I was thinking in my head, where is Cavendish?'"

Cavendish was there all right, but behind in a bad position - and with the uphill sprint he was unable to correct it in time before the line.

"I was a bit pissed off actually," said Cavendish. "George [Hincapie] was taking me down the right but I swung off to get on Baumann's wheel, but he died at 200 metres. Then at 100 metres I started my sprint but I was just out of position."

"It's the first [sprint] I've lost since the Giro, but it wasn't a lack of speed!"

"When I knew Cavendish wasn't there I had more morale to sprint," said van Poppel, who is the son of the famous Dutch sprinter Jean-Paul Van Poppel. "I was thinking this is my chance, I have to do this!' I like to race against the big guys like Cavendish.

"I was thinking that it was too early but, better too early than too late! We turned the corner and started up the hill. I thought for sure I would see the other riders come past me on the left. But there was no one. That's when I knew I won. I really couldn't believe it. And I didn't know that my teammate was on my wheel either. It was a good day for us."

Back in the field race leader Vande Velde rolled in safe and sound. "Today was a perfect combination for our team," he said. Luckily our team didn't do one-tenth the work as yesterday, which means they are a little more fresh to help me defend tomorrow."

Vande Velde said the humidity was the story of the day. "No one is used to the humidity. It was noticeable as soon as we got off the bus today! But we thought we would be riding through rain, so in some ways it was a bonus."

Cavendish's fourth place gave him five more points than Baumann, who finished in ninth. But he said that jersey is an afterthought compared to stage wins and getting teammate Michael Rogers into the lead. "It was just my turn to attack," he said about riding in the main break of the day. "We just wanted someone in the break and I just ended up in it and we stayed away. Ideally I would have stayed in the peloton and gotten the points jersey back just by winning the stage. I much rather win the stages!"

Rogers is still 18 seconds behind Vande Velde, but with another rolling day into St. Charles tomorrow. "For sure we'll attack," he said. "It's less than 20 seconds so you have to keep trying."

How it unfolded

If the rolling countryside of Missouri was not enough to tire the riders, Mother Nature added some addition variable - humidity that felt like it was 200% and temperatures touching 90F (32C). But this did not discourage active racing right from the referee's flag drop.

And like yesterday it was Columbia on the attack, trying to put the pressure on race leader Christian Vande Velde and Garmin-Chipotle. But they responded to Columbia's attack right away, showing they still had fight left in them. Columbia continued to be active early and got some help from the numerous domestic teams looking for a season-making stage win.

For the next 20 miles it was the same racing as yesterday, fast and furious. But on one of the rolling hills a counter-attack split and the peloton finally relented. In this group was double stage winner Mark Cavendish (Columbia) who sat one point behind sprint leader Eric Baumann (Sparkasse). Sparkasse apparently did not hear his number called over radio tour, and allowed the gap to grow. By the time they realized he was in the group of 12, the first sprint of the day was 1km away. Dirk Muller (Sparkasse) tried to then get across to challenge Cavendish, along with Edward King (Bissell Pro Cycling) and Rory Sutherland (Health Net p/b Maxxis), but to no avail.

Cavendish took the sprint uncontested while Sparkasse assembled on the front of the peloton. But with so many teams represented in the break, nobody wanted to help chase. As well Garmin-Chipotle was content as no GC threats were up the road. The gap did come down to 45 seconds but without any help, the chasing was futile for one team alone.

The second sprint line 20 miles away in Vienna, MO came too fast for Sparkasse again, and Cavendish extended his lead to five points over Baumann. With all of the sprints out of the way the gap grew to more than three minutes, as Vande Velde had at least 10 minutes on the riders in the break.

Even though he had his points for the day Cavendish still took his pulls in the breakaway, as did the entire break. But with about 30km from the finish things began to get active in the break, as the peloton started reeling them in. With Cavendish still up the road it was Sparkasse on the front, not wanting him to get the triple points on the finish line. This, plus the help of Garmin-Chipotle, brought the gap down.

Up front Cavendish decided he had enough of the break. "When it was under three minutes I started missing turns and less than a minute I just sat up."

Finally the break attacked itself into pieces, and only four riders remained: Darren Lill (BMC), Michael Creed (Rock Racing), Chris Wherry (Toyota - United) and David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies - Medifast). This group worked together a few more miles into the capital of Missouri, Jefferson City. But eventually Lill upped the pace and only Veilleux, as the two entered the finishing circuits, but only 15 seconds ahead of the field.

"When there were 25 km to go I tried to give everything I could to make it to the finish," said Veilleux who was voted most aggressive. "I was trying to get away and maybe do one lap out front. Lill is a strong rider and I think we made a good duo. I think I had a little more punch and kick than Lill did but he would always drag me back."

By the time the field saw the finish line it was all together and two laps to go. But no team had any numbers on the front with total control - just a smattering of Columbia, Garmin-Chipotle, Health Net-Maxis and Liquigas.

Sebastian Haedo (Colavita-Sutter Home) and Frank Pipp (Health Net-Maxxis) made solo attempts, but the hard-charging field combined with the rolling hills of the circuits, shut these attempts down. A final move came from the only Missouri-native Brad Huff (Jelly Belly), trying to lead-out his teammate Nic Sanderson. But he ended up alone on the front with 500 meters to go, giving the home crowd a show.

But the field came by in a flash, led not by Columbia and Cavendish, but by the young Rabobank continental squad - Boy Van Poppel taking the win with teammate Michael Van Stayen barely edging out Keven Lacombe (Kelly Benefit Strategies - Medifast) for third.
