Giro d'Italia Femminile - 2.1 (W)Italy, July 5-13, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - July 10: Novara (ITT), 9.3 kmWhitelaw squeaks out a stage winAustralian takes TT by tenths; overall changes slightlyBy Ben Atkins in Novara Vicki Whitelaw (Australian National Team) took the biggest time trial win of her career to date in stage five of the women's Giro d'Italia. She blitzed the 9.3 km course – where the only obstacles consisted of a few railway bridges and a persistent wind - in a time of 11'53.43, averaging a remarkable 46.956 kph. She eclipsed the previous best time set by Kazakh champion and time trial specialist Zulfia Zabirova by just 0.36 of a second. American Amber Neben (Flexpoint) was just over a second back in 11'54.90, with Danish champion Linda Villumsen (Team Columbia) a fraction slower, putting the top four finishers inside one and a half seconds of each other. "I would like to think I'm a bit of a time trial specialist," said Whitelaw after her victory, "I kind of enjoy this discipline so I've been working a lot towards success in this event. "Typically I like a few hills in a time trial course but it was all very flat, as you know," she continued. "[It was] not that technical, but I took all the corners very fast – and often I think maybe too fast, I almost lost a bit of control on some of them. "I figured I had a bad crash yesterday so I had nothing to lose today, and I came out with the goods so I'm very happy." Zabirova, the 40th of the 116 starters was fastest at the halfway point and came home in the first time under twelve minutes. Despite her fast time, the Kazakh road and time trial champion was not confident that her time would stand up to the remainder of the field to follow, partly due to the short time that she had had to prepare. "It was good for the day for me," she told Cyclingnews, "but we arrived with little time for a proper warm up; we arrived too late, but it was okay: I'm feeling good." Time trial specialists to come later in the field meant that Zabirova did not expect to take the victory: "I think Melchers [-Van Poppel (Flexpoint)] is good, so I don't think so, but maybe they're tired," she said. Linda Villumsen came close to the time of the Kazakh, but the flat nature of the course, as well as riding one of Columbia's prototype Giants competitively for the first time, meant that she was downbeat about her chances of staying on the podium. "I reckon it was too fast," the Danish champion said, "and I'm riding on a new bike so I'm taking it a little bit slow in the corners." "I think all the top ones are to come," she continued, "so we'll see [about my chances of the top three]. It was a good ride so I'm happy with it." Sprinters Charlotte Becker (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) and Kirsten Wild (AA Drink) both managed to dip below 12 minutes, but both were still more than two seconds slower than the Kazakh powerhouse. It was not in fact – as she had predicted – Melchers-Van Poppel that went better than Zabirova's time but Whitelaw, off at number 86. The Australian was forced to wait almost 40 minutes though as the final 30 riders – containing a number of specialists – took their turns to ride. Melchers-Van Poppel posted a fast time, but was over 13 seconds off the pace, but team-mate Neben pushed close to go into third place on the stage. "I had a good ride," Neben said. "I didn't feel fantastic, but it's a stage race so usually when you time trial in a stage race you don't feel super-good. I was steady, solid, I gave it what I had today." With her fast time, the former US champion managed to claw back 34 seconds on race leader Fabiana Luperini (Menikini-Selle Italia-Master Colors) and move four places up the general classification to sixth. Three-time Giro winner and last year's runner-up Nicole Brändli (Bigla) managed to limit her losses to the other contenders finishing 33 seconds down on Whitelaw – but one ahead of Luperini. The Swiss rider was still feeling the effects of yesterday's mountain stage. "Today I didn't feel so good so it was not a normal race," she explained. "Yesterday on that last mountain I was really [dead], so today I'm trying for a little recuperation and then see for tomorrow." Third from last to start, Italian time trial champion Tatiana Guderzo (Gauss RDZ Ormu) was pleased to have been able to pull back a little of the time back from Luperini that she lost on the climb to Monte Serra yesterday. "Today I rode well," she said, "it felt better than the stage yesterday [where I finished third]. I'm pleased to have taken back some seconds from Luperini and Pucinskaite and increased my lead over Hausler. Overall, I think it went well." "Yesterday was a hard stage," she continue, "but my legs felt good. But Luperini was too strong and riding her home roads." For the newly crowned Italian time trial champion, it was an honour to wear her national flag in her national tour, as she explained to Cyclingnews: "Today it was good to wear the tricolore, it's important. I won the Italian time trial championships two weeks ago, and today it was good to defend the jersey." Luperini finished the time trial in 31st place, and her lead remains intact – albeit slightly reduced – over Pucinskaite and Guderzo, her two nearest challengers. With the event that suits her least out of the way, the Italian champion, and four-time Giro winner is looking forward to the next two stages as the course heads into the mountains of Lombardia. "Today was a difficult day because it's a time trial and it's not my specialty," Luperini said, translated through Australian team-mate Rochelle Gilmore. "Tomorrow I have a bit of an advantage because it is my kind of course in the hills, and hopefully I will have a strong team." Stage 6 will go from Cardano al Campo – a stone's throw from Milano' Malpensa airport – and head north. The course will pass close to Varese – venue for this year's World Championships – and cross two 1st category mountains before finishing at Laveno Mombello on the shores of Lago Maggiore.
