Claudia Häusler (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung) has won the toughest stage of the Giro d'Italia so far, defeating Amber Neben (Flexpoint) and Nicole Brändli (Bigla) in a three-up sprint in the lakeside town of Laveno Mombello. The victory increases her lead in the white jersey classification for young riders, but more importantly puts further pressure on current maglia rosa Fabiana Luperini (Minikini-Selle Itallia-Master Colors). The Italian champion finished the stage in fifth place, 56 seconds behind Häusler.

Häusler proved the fastest of the three breakaway riders after a rain-soaked stage in the pre-alpi of Lombardia; conditions that the young German enjoys. "After the first mountain we were eight girls and Brändli in front and we had Edita in the back together with Luperini," Häusler told Cyclingnews after the finish. "So I had to wait for [team-mate] Edita [Pucinskaite] because she [was] in second place and I didn't work in this group. Then, after the last mountain of course I had to give everything, it was my chance."

With Nicole Brändli so active on the stage, Häusler was concerned that the Swiss might threaten hers and Pucinskaite's positions in the overall classification. "I am always scared behind her, and I was surprised to see her again and then I thought it's [my] chance."

Tomorrow's stage gives Häusler further chance to take time from Luperini and bid for overall victory. Her team-mate Pucinskaite slipped down the classification after losing more than two minutes to the Italian and so will be a valuable ally on the tough mountain stage. "Of course we always have to try," she agreed. "It's hard, because in the last mountain everyone gives everything, you don't really need an order you just have to see who has the best legs."

Nicole Brändli was by far the most aggressive rider of the day, attacking with team-mate Noemi Cantele on the descent of the Passo Sette Termini after 60km. The pair managed to build a lead of almost a minute by the foot of the final climb – Cantele pacing Brändli the whole way. Cantele sat up as soon as the climb began and Brändli continued alone. She was caught before the summit, but tried again on the next descent, crashing as the roads leveled out. "Yes, it was planned," Brändli told Cyclingnews. "I wanted to get away on the downhill, but unfortunately I had a little crash at the end of the [second] downhill and the other two could catch me and we came to the finish together."

Despite being joined by Neben and Häusler, the Swiss would have preferred to stay away by herself. The three of them worked together in the final stages but this was no consolation for missing out on the victory: "No," she said, "I wanted to arrive alone."

Tomorrow's mountain stage offers further chances to attack, but also plays into the climbing strength of Luperini rather than the descending of Brändli. "I think it will be hard," she said, "because tomorrow it [finishes] in the mountain and not after a downhill as it was here."

"We planned to attack in the downhill after the first climb," Brändli's Bigla team-mate Cantele told Cyclingnews, "and I was there with her and I made a time trial.

"Then, when I begin the climb I say "Ciao!"" she laughed.

"Tomorrow we have to do the same job; we have to attack and try to gain the maximum."

As a local rider – from nearby Varese, the host city of this year's World Championships, Cantele was expected to be aggressive on this stage. Instead of using her local knowledge for her own benefit however, she used it in support of her team-mate. "We know the road," said the Varesina, "and we also know that we are faster than Luperini in the downhill so it was the only place where we could attack and make it."

American Amber Neben lost a lot of time to Luperini on stage 4's final climb to Monte Serra, but gained almost a minute on the Italian today. "I just wanted to – after Monte Serra, I didn't have a good day in the finish – so I just try to chip away, little by little," she explained.

"I took a little in the time trial and a little today. I felt pretty good, I had a good climb – second time up I was alone over the top – but coming down it was real wet and it was a little slick and I wasn't interested in taking huge risks. So I just settled into things and Claudia came back, and then Brändli came back – she came flying by us, but crashed – so then there was the three of us."

She was obviously hoping to take the stage victory, but found herself at a disadvantage to the German in the final few hundred metres. "The three of us rode together, then the last corner: Häusler took it first."

On the way into the finish, Neben and her two companions were keen to maximise the time gained over the chasing maglia rosa, but her own relatively low overall position compared to the others meant that there was less pressure on Neben to work. "We saw 46 [seconds], Jean Paul said 55 at one point so I'm guessing it was around a minute. At that point it's more important for the other two to be riding hard because they're closer to taking the jersey away."

As for her chances of challenging Luperini in tomorrow's tough mountain stage, the American is her usual realistic, but optimistic self. "I'm pretty far back," she smiled. "I'm looking for the podium really. Of course, I always race and you never know. Nothing's impossible!" Italian champion Fabiana Luperini still holds the maglia rosa albeit with her lead over Häusler and Brändli reduced by half. "Today for me was a hard day because the descents were dangerous in the rain and it was difficult," she told Cyclingnews. "Fortunately I managed to maintain my lead in the classification. Tomorrow is a difficult stage with lots of climbing.

"Brändli attacked in the first descent and on the second she had 50 seconds," she continued. "We caught her at one kilometre before the GPM and after that she attacked on the descent."

As for her lead in the general classification: "It's a bit smaller. Yesterday I lost a few seconds to Pucinskaite; today I lost all but 42 to Häusler For me it's changed to Häusler from Pucinskaite in second place.

"Tomorrow I have to watch Brändli and Häusler, I just have 50 seconds to win this Giro. In the climbs it's no problem, but it's the descents that can be a bit of a problem for me."

Tomorrow's stage will be the final chance for Luperini's rivals to challenge for the final classification. It will be the shortest road stage of the race covering just 83.8km, but the last 40km will feature two 1st and two 2nd category climbs, including the final ascent to the finish at Montevecchia.

How it unfolded

114 riders took the start under leaden skies in the Lombardia town of Cardano al Campo, a stone's throw from Milano's Malpensa Airport. The hot, sunny weather that has been following this race since the Mantova prologue broke and heavy showers that fell in the morning were threatening to return.

Attacks came in immediately, notably from Brazilian champion Clemilda Fernandes Silva (Chirio Forno d'Asolo), who managed to pull out 14 seconds before being pulled back.

After 20km a small group got clear, including Eva Lutz (Nürnberger Versicherung), Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (Columbia), Monica Holler (Bigla), Agne Bagdanoviciute (System Data) Russian champion Julia Martisova (Gauss RDZ Ormu). They didn't manage to pull out a significant gap though, and the peloton came together again on the approach to the first climb.

As the climb started a group including Kimberley Anderson (Columbia) and Bigla pair Swiss champion Jennifer Hohl and Andrea Thurig. The Swiss team were always going to be active with the team including overall contender Nicole Brändli – currently in 4th place – and local rider Noemi Cantele.

The favourites came together at the top of the climb, which was taken by white jersey Claudia Häusler (Nürnberger Versicherung).

On the descent Brändli and Cantele went on the attack, hoping to put pressure on maglia rosa Fabiana Luperini (Menikini-Selle Italia-Master Colors).

The Bigla pair quickly pulled out a gap and with Cantele using a combination of her classics-winning power and her local knowledge to pull her team-mate along. As they reached the foot of the climb, the Varesina pulled over to allow her Swiss team-mate to continue.

The overall favourites, including Luperini, Amber Neben (Flexpoint) and Häusler reeled in the Bigla rider with around 1km to the summit, and Neben attacked alone to crest the GPM first.

Häusler followed Neben over the top – her team captain Edita Pucinskaite having been left behind on the slopes of the climb – and the pair were quickly joined, then passed by a speeding Brändli.

Brändli continued solo down the descent, but with heavy rain falling, the roads were slippery and the Swiss rider slid off on a corner. Neben and Häusler continued, and Brändli – thankfully not seriously hurt – rejoined them.

The three riders worked together with Luperini and the overnight third placed Tatiana Guderzo (Gauss RDZ Ormu) chasing at just under a minute behind.

As the three breakaways took the last corner, Häusler was ahead and kept her position all the way to the line. Neben came in just behind the German and Brändli followed two seconds later.

Guderzo took the sprint for 4th, ahead of Luperini 56 seconds behind Häusler, but holds on to her maglia rosa with a 42 second lead over the German, with Brändli a further 8 seconds back.
