Tour of Qinghai Lake - 2.HCChina, July 11-20, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - July 12: Xining - Qinghai Lake Hotel, 145.5 kmDanish domination; Rasmussen makes it two from twoBy Paul Verkuylen in Qinghai Lake, China For the second stage in succession, Denmark's Alex Rasmussen was untouchable, powering to his second stage win at Qinghai Lake. After a perfect lead-out from his team, Rasmussen launched himself at the line with 200 meters to go to take the victory clearly ahead of Matej Stare (Perutnina) and Hossein Nateghi (Tabriz Petrochemical Team). The Danish squad are seemingly untouchable as they put their finishing touches on their Olympic Games preparations. Rasmussen was clearly elated after the finish with his second win, praising his team for the work they put in to set him up. "It felt good, really, really good!" he explained. "We had the team on the front from thirty kilometers to go, just rolling around easy. Then with 10 kilometers to go we got an echelon going a bit faster. "With three kilometers to go we went to the front with four guys. We stretched it out in the wind so it was a perfect lead-out. The altitude made it very hard, but you also sprint faster so you can do a longer sprint. Up here 300 meters doesn't feel as long as at sea level," he explained. Rasmussen's is not very well know for his climbing capabilities, but with the help of the experience which he gained here last year plus the effort of his team-mates he was able to put himself into a position to take the stage and hold the yellow leaders jersey. "I had some problems over the mountain like last year, but I just took it easy and kept my heart rate down. I had three guys to help me after the mountain and we picked up the front group after about 10 kilometres in the down hill so it was perfect." In the same stage last year Rasmussen finished over 14 minutes behind the winner, but this year it was clear to see that he is coming into top form, just in time for the Olympics. With two more stage suited to a bunch sprint to come Rasmussen will try for a hat trickof wins tomorrow but is realistic about his chances of holding onto the leader's jersey until the conclusion of the race. "Last year I was sixth in the same stage [tomorrow's stage] and then third in the next stage so I will go for two more stages. Then I am probably going to lose the jersey on the mountain stage and then we will ride for somebody else," he explained. Two riders, Lucas Persson (Cycle Collstrop) and Hossein Jahabanian (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) escaped early on in the stage claiming both the mountain sprint and the intermediate sprint on offer. The pair quickly gained a 30 second gap after just 20 minutes of racing. They built their lead up to a maximum of 5'17" with just 65km covered. Just after the intermediate sprint, the pair were reeled in by the peloton, lead by the Danish team, who used the wide open roads and cross winds to their advantage. Persson was the strongest climber of the pair and used his strength on the climb to claim the first mountains jersey of the race. "We were able to hold a good tempo the whole time," Persson explained. "It was just unfortunate that [Jahabanian] got tired and we dropped a lot of speed. "The climb went well and normally I am good on the climbs but I was unsure of my condition. Two weeks ago I had my appendix removed. I attacked in the beginning to see if I could do something." Sevilla downBehind Rasmussen a crash with 300 meters to go brought down general classification favourite, Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing). A spectator attempting to take a picture of the finish stepped out onto the road and into the path of Sevilla. The impact snapped the forks of his De Rosa and left him with injuries to his hip and wrist. He was taken to hospital for further observations and it is not yet known the extent of his injuries. (Stayed tuned for an update in our next edition of news). How it unfoldedWith the Pezula Racing team finally making it to Xining last night, the race got underway with the full roster of riders. After just five kilometers of racing, Lucas Persson (Cycle Collstrop) and Hossein Jahabanian (Tabriz Petrochemical Team) escaped from the peloton and quickly built up a lead of over 30 seconds. The peloton seemed intent on letting the pair have their time in the sun as they stretched their lead out to 3'35" after just 25km of racing. But by the time they crested the climb, which saw them rise 1100 meters on 87km the peloton had pulled them back to 1'29". From there, with the wide open roads and rolling hills, combined with the cross winds the peloton quickly pulled the pair back, and with 30 kilometers remaining the race was all back together. The Danish team sensed a great opportunity to add to Rasmussen's prologue win and quickly set about stretching the main field out. They kept the field together for the remainder of the stage and set up Rasmussen perfectly to take the stage win in a sprint.
