Scody Cup Cycling Series Tour of Gippsland - NEAustralia, July 30-August 3, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - August 1: Bairnsdale Road Race, 72kmNewell takes tough Lindenow runBy Rod Morris Newell moved to within three seconds on general classification of his Praties team-mate after winning the tough Dargo to Lindenow stage over 73.6 kilometres. Newell had been caught up in some mayhem in the Dargo to Lindenow race, but was able to recover and reel back in the early leaders including the hard working Peter Herzig, who had fought off numerous challengers. The Praties team is concentrating hard on winning its first ever multi stage tour in the history of the Scody Cup, which has raced under previous banners, Tattersall's Cup (1996-2006) and Timbercorp Cup (2007). Whilst enjoying a handful of stage placings and providing the winner of the king of the mountain championship in last year's Tour of the Murray River, as well as grabbing the overall lead in the 2006 Tour of the Tasmania and earlier this week in Gippsland, Praties had never won a stage race. That was until Newell, 24, hailing from Brunswick (Vic.) strolled up behind a tiring Herzig 20 kilometres from the finish and then proceeded to ride away from him with an alarming rate. Such was Newell's strength over the closing kilometres, he was able to sit tall in the saddle and relish the adulation of the crowd as he crossed the finish line some 59 seconds ahead of a gutsy Herzig. Herzig continued to work hard but had only two-seconds to spare from the chasing peloton in the home straight. The bunch was led home by the NSW based Luis Trueba riding for the Drapac Porsche outfit. Leigh Howard, wearer of the king of the mountain jersey had a stage to forget after suffering a puncture early and not being able to recover. Howard limped across the finish line 15'50" behind Newell and slipped from seventh on general classification to 29th and out of contention to claim overall honours when the tour finishes in Paynseville on Sunday afternoon.
