Nuggety little Tasmanian rider Daniel Furmston moved into the outright lead of the Lakes Oil Tour of Gippsland after a day of dramatic racing.

Furmston, 24, finished third in the afternoon stage from Orbost to Lakes Entrance, but was able to reel in the 23 second deficit he faced to South Australian Will Dickeson at the start of the 113.7-kilometre fourth stage.

Riding for the Tasmanian fast food company, Praties, Furmston is one of the most improved riders in the country.

Furmston won the King of the Mountain Championship in last year's Tour of the Murray River and started yesterday's stages holding the KOM jersey in this tour.

Whilst disappointed to have relinquished the polka dot jersey to Leigh Howard, Furmston now has bigger fish to fry.

He is the first Tasmanian to lead a major Australian multi-stage road race since his Praties team-mate Tim Walker held yellow after the second stage of the 2006 Tour of Tasmania.

Furmston now has an 11 second advantage over fellow Tasmanian Bernard Sulzberger and a further two seconds to Timothy Roe, winner of yesterday's afternoon Orbost to Lakes Entrance mountain stage.

Today's other stage was won by David Kemp in the Orbost criterium.

Seven hill climbs from Orbost to Lakes Entrance took its toll on the legs of many of the riders still remaining in the tour as general classification underwent a major overhaul.

Will Dickeson surrendered his lead after missing both the early break and the eventual winning breakaway, 35 kilometres from the finish. Victorian Leigh Howard (Jayco/VIS) jumped away with Kyle Marwood (Lakes Oil Cycling Team), Michael England (GD Triple Play) and Craig McCartney (Savings & Loans) and between controlled the major part of the race. Howard won six of the seven hill climbs, to claim important bonus seconds and improve his tour ranking of 14th into a top 10 spot and become a contender for overall honours.

At one stage, Howard and his co-escapees had established a gap of more than 90 seconds on the road and with his bonuses was the virtual tour leader.

McCartney lost his place in the break group after puncturing 40 kilometres into the race and was soon back with the peloton. Howard, Marwood and England boxed on gamely before the peloton chased down just after the Nowa Nowa intermediate sprint.

Another hill climb hurt many riders before a group of 16 re-settled at the head of the race.

South Australian youngster Timothy Roe, riding for the Savings and Loans team made his move about eight kilometres from home and was able to establish a winning break, a gap of 48 seconds when he crossed the finish line in Lakes Entrance. Roe had enough time to sit up and salute the crowd as he enjoyed his first Scody Cup road race success.

Earlier this year, Roe announced to the cycling world that he was ready to showcase his wares when he won the Mersey Valley Tour in Tasmania.

Queensland veteran Cameron Hughes led the chasers home and was far from disgraced finishing second. There was a further three-second gap to the third placegetter, Daniel Furmston, who took over as the new leader. Another veteran, Peter Milostic, finished in fourth less than a minute behind Roe, while Roe's team-mate Chris Luxton was next across the line.

The tour continues on Friday with another dual stage day, Dargo to Lindenow (73.6 kilometres) in the morning and a Bairnsdale criterium (33 kilometres) in the afternoon.
