Scody Cup Cycling Series Tour of Gippsland - NEAustralia, July 30-August 3, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 31: Orbost Patties Foods crit, 42kmA gutsy win by KempBy Rod Morris A gutsy solo ride for 15 laps of the 1.4-kilometre Orbost circuit paid dividends for Queensland rider David Kemp. Whilst not considered a serious threat at 1'31" behind the tour leader, Kemp was allowed plenty of latitude and was able to reduce his deficit to 48 seconds and improved his rating from 27th overall to 12th. Dickeson maintained his hold on the leader's jersey although his advantage was reduced from 22 seconds to eight seconds by Queensland's Malcolm Rudolph, who looks to be concentrating on the sprint championship. Rudolph was a clear leader after the opening day and extended his points margin to 18 after winning four more intermediate sprints and running second in another yesterday morning. Kemp has a strong history in the Scody Cup, having won the 2006 Australian Cycling Grand Prix road race in Ballarat and the Merbein to Wentworth stage of the 2006 Tour of the Murray River. He has also scored nine other podium placings and in 2006 was third on general classification of the Tour of Tasmania. And last year he won the Ouyen – Patchewollock – Ouyen stage of the Tour of the Murray River. Kemp made his move on lap 15 and for the final 20 kilometres was never headed. At one point, Kemp had stolen a march of more than 30 seconds on the chasing bunch, allowing him to pick up valuable time bonuses from the intermediate sprints. Leading the peloton home in the sprint for second was Geelong whiz-kid, Leigh Howard, just ahead of rejuvenated Tasmanian rider Nathan Clarke, who had finished second to fellow Apple Islander Bernard Sulzberger in Wednesday's Mallacoota criterium. Tour leader Dickeson was safely tucked away in the main bunch and did his chances of overall tour victory no harm.
