A question of teamwork: Serpa's strength hands jersey to Ivanov

Before today's crucial stage, Serramenti team manager Gianni Savio asked his riders a simple question: did they want to win the stage itself or the 2008 Tour de Langkawi? Not surprisingly, they chose the latter. So it came as no surprise when José Serpa, the team's best climber, sacrificed his own chances to shepherd team-mate Ruslan Ivanov up the final four kilometres and in doing so drag the 34 year-old Moldavian clear of all his rivals for an almost certain victory when the race's 13th edition ends in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

The Serramenti duo's performance on Fraser Hill, itself something of an unknown quantity before today, was only eclipsed by 22 year-old Italian Filippo Savini. The CSF Group Navigare rider going solo inside the final four kilometres for his first professional victory.

"This hill really suited me," said Savini. "It wasn't too hard and I felt really good. In the final kilometres there were a few attacks especially from Serpa. I managed to respond to those attacks and in the last three or four kilometres I felt good so I tried to attack myself and it went well."

For maillot jaune Ivanov, whose career nearly ended two years ago when contract offers were not forthcoming, today's plan was a simple one. "We have done what we had to do," he stated. "Make the rhythm of the race as high as possible and make the sprinters who were in front of us on general classification get dropped.

"There were three guys ahead with my team-mate Serpa who waited for me and helped me to come across to the front of the race. He gave me a big hand - in three or four kilometres he did all the work and the 40 seconds I have gained are all because of him."

At 25 kilometres in length, the ascent of Fraser Hill was always going to be a pivotal point in a race which so far hasn't seen anything vaguely resembling a mountain. Beginning with a shallow gradient, the road wound through dense tropical rainforest before taking a sharp right and kicking upwards at eight kilometres to go.

"We knew the climb wouldn't be so hard as we could see from the race profile," said Ivanov. "In the last 25 kilometres the average speed was still quite high so it was a fast climb. There weren't very steep parts in the climb. I'm not a climber for hills above 2000 metres, but on a hill like this I can defend myself very well and that's what I did today.

"I've won other stage races before including the Coppi e Bartoli," he added. "I've won nice races but as far as prestige is concerned, this is the nicest - if I win tomorrow."

Added team manager Savio: "It's not important whether we win with one rider or another. I think that José Serpa had the possibility to win the stage today, but we explained that there would be a choice and our choice was overall classification."

After taking the yellow jersey yesterday, 21 year-old Australian Mitch Docker was never expected to keep it beyond today's tough test. But that didn't stop the Drapac Porsche youngster producing a fine performance on Fraser Hill today, only conceding 1'20 to the stage winner.

"I think I went too hard when they were putting the shit down and I just blew to the shit-house," Docker told Cyclingnews straight after his arrival at the summit. "The climb really suited me actually, it was fast and maybe if I had known it with a bit more training I would have gone alright. It was good, it was a good ride I thought. It was hard though, I needed someone else there."

Forty-four seconds behind Docker came an exhausted Shinici Fukushima, whose performance was enough to place him back into the blue Asian rider's jersey - this time for good. "I tried really hard and the group started climbing very fast," said the Meitan Hompo man. "I dropped off at the end. I don't feel that I've won because I dropped off! But I'm very happy to have this jersey."

How it unfolded

After a few days of relatively mild weather, the mercury had crept back up for the tour's queen stage today. After a long morning transfer, there was a nervous tension amongst riders at the start city Temerloh, with the 19 general classification contenders knowing today's climb would likely decided the race.

Knowing that the unknown climb up Fraser Hill would be the make or break factor in their Langkawi title hopes, a group of 25 riders moved off the front of the peloton immediately. With just 15 seconds separating the top 19 riders, however, the group was never going to stay away and were quickly brought back in.

An attack by France's Cédric Pineau (AG2r - La Mondiale) was similarly short live, while an immediate attack by Koji Fukushima (Meitan Hompo - GDR) suffered the same fate. A larger bunch attempted a similar shift away as the earlier group, but yet again the move was brought back by a charging peloton.

Just as it looked likely the peloton would ride together until the base of the event's largest climb, it allowed one rider, China's Fuyu Li (Trek-Marco Polo), to go down the road. Li pulled out a small gap, which gradually increased, before it blew out to nearly two minutes as the bunch took a toilet stop.

As the former Discovery Channel rider headed down the road he took out top points in all three of the day's intermediate sprints. It was a perfect situation for points classification leader Aurélien Clerc, with Li taking away valuable points that the Bouygues Telecom rider's classification rival Anuar Manan (Letua Cycling Team) would otherwise have been contending for.

Li's lead had stretched to 2'02 by kilometre 38, where Nikolai Schwarz (Team Ista) abandoned the race. The Chinese rider's lead was reeled in to 1'26 after the second sprint, where it hovered for 10 kilometres as Drapac-Porsche and Serramenti PVC controlled the peloton's pace.

Two Malaysian riders attacked the peloton after it passed the 50 kilometres remaining sign, heading towards the third sprint. The pair's efforts forced up the pace, decreasing Li's lead.

As Li's lead dropped to 46 seconds Japan's Fukushima powered out of the peloton and down the road once more. Fukushima, who had again played a harmonica to the crowed on the start line, pushed hard down the road to first catch and then drop Li.

Fukushima managed to pull out a longer lead margin than on his earlier attempt, but the 45 second mark would be all the Japanese rider could manage before being hunted down as the decisive climb drew near. As riders commenced their attacks in the peloton, the speed increased and Fukushima was caught.

The peloton remained together as it travelled through the very early stages of the event's biggest climb, the first look it would get at the replacement climb for the traditional Genting Highlands stage. As the road kicked up slightly, the rainforest thickened and drew closer to the road.

As the peloton reached the first serious stage of the climb at kilometre 100 Australian Jai Crawford (Trek-Marco Polo) hit the gas and pulled away from the peloton. The Tasmanian had been banking on a tough climb to show his legs, but the early stages weren't steep enough and proved too fast for Crawford to maintain his 20 second advantage.

With Crawford's lead margin fall and the bunch pushing at an impressive 30 kilometres/hour, Fukushima's earlier efforts took a toll as the Japanese rider fell off the back.

While Fukushima's day came to an end, the signs were good for general classification leader Mitchell Docker (Drapac-Porsche), with the sprinter holding 10th wheel as AG2r - La Mondiale drilled up the hill. Despite saying the previous day he rides at the rear whenever a hill comes along, Bouygues Telecom's sprinter Clerc even took a turn driving the peloton.

Despite being out of the race, Argentine Ruben Bongiorno and Mexican Julio Cuapio Perez from CSF Group Navigare were again riding the Langkawi stage prior to the peloton as training. The two weren't out for a Sunday ride, with the pair putting one another in the hurt box, but they again couldn't hold out the hard-charging peloton and were passed as the race entered the final 15 kilometres.

As the race entered the business end of the climb in the final 10 kilometres, the peloton finally relented and started to fracture. A group of four broke off the front and finally the race started to unfold.

The quartet consisted of Filippo Savini (CSF Group Navigare) and Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli trio Jose Perez Serpa, Carlos José Ochoa and Jackson Rodriguez. With three of Gianni Savio's Serramenti PVC men present in the break, the Venezuelan team looked certain to lock in another stage victory.

The situation was quickly turned on its head, however, with Tour de San Luis queen stage winner Rodriguez being dropped from the bunch. As the Venezuelan, who was in general classification contention, dropped behind the group's strongest man Serpa slowed right down.

Colombia's Serpa sandbagged his own efforts until he fell back to the chasing group of two riders, where the team's second general classification rider Ruslan Ivanov awaited. Serpa dragged the Moldavian rider back to the lead group some 14 seconds ahead, sacrificing his own stage hopes for the team's general classification efforts.

As the pair arrived at the front group Italy's Savini pulled away with one kilometre to go, and stormed to the top for victory some 15 seconds ahead of his breakaway companions and still looking fresh. Next across the line was Ivanov, who crossed the line with Serpa, some 28 seconds ahead of team-mate Ochoa who claimed fourth place.

Tinkoff Credit System's Walter Pedraza, who rode for Serramenti PVC in 2007, claimed fifth spot while early-attacker Crawford came in 1'18 behind in 16th spot. General classification leader Docker put in an outstanding climb to take 19th spot, but the 1'05 time difference to Ivanov sees the Australia lose the leader's jersey to the Moldavian.

Despite being dropped by the leaders, Japan's Shinichi Fukushima re-claimed the Asian rider's classification jersey and looks set to win the blue jersey.
