A dramatic Stage 7 of the Tour de Langkawi has seen Alexandre Usov (AG2R La Mondiale) claim a crash-marred finish, while Australia's Mitchell Docker (Drapac-Porsche) has taken over the leader's jersey. The action began early in the stage with Bouygues Telecom and Drapac-Porsche waging an intermediate sprint battle that saw Docker bridge the one second deficit to Matthieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom) and take the yellow leader's jersey off the Frenchman.

While it was fortunate for Sprick and Docker their battle didn't follow through to the day's final sprint, 2008 stage winners Alberto Loddo (Tinkoff Credit Systems) and Danilo Hondo (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) were not so fortunate. Loddo was involved in a tangle with Argentinean Mauro Abel Richeze (CSF Group Navigare), who came away from the accident unscathed, while Loddo fell to the ground with Hondo, a passenger in the incident, and were struck by the bunch.

The altercation was investigated by UCI officials after the race, with chief commissaire for the event Madis Lepajõe announcing that the UCI officials had found Richeze at fault.

"We saw the television cameras and they have a very good picture," said the Estonian commissaire. "So it was clear evidence that the Navigare rider [Mauro Richeze] was deviating from the direct line and caused the danger for the others. Together with his rival Alberto Loddo, they collided and there was a crash.

"He will be relegated to last place in the field plus additional penalties as per UCI regulations," he added.

The crash, which saw South Africa's Nolan Hoffman split a finger open after flying over the top of Loddo, left Usov feeling a little hollow in victory.

"The crash today has been very influential on the final results," admitted the Belarusian. "It's good for me, [but] I'm sad for the riders who went down. I don't know exactly what happened, I just saw it happen 20 metres before the line. So that's how I could come first without wanting it."

Clarifying his comments, Usov described himself as a deserving but not rightful winner. "You can't say that I don't deserve to win because to come first on the line you need to be well position in the sprint anyway," he said. "But if it was a clean sprint I wouldn't have been the winner today."

While Usov was disappointed with the way, through no fault of his own, in which he claimed victory, Docker was on cloud nine after his Stage 7 achievement. Docker has waged a tight battle with Sprick's Bouygues Telecom squad, which leads the sprint classification with Aurélien Clerc, all week after trailing the Frenchman by one second since Sunday.

"Especially two days ago I tried to get the jersey then and I finished fourth and fifth in the sprints, I was so close and today I had to give it everything as I thought it was my last chance," said Docker. "I only managed third in the first sprint, and I put everything into that. I just kept going and I got some more time on the next one.

"It was really hard to even get just one or two seconds today and it was really worth it towards the end," he added.

While Clerc was disappointed his team wasn't able to continue its stranglehold on the yellow jersey, the Swiss rider was pleased after doubling his sprint classification lead to 21 points.

"It's okay, we make a good job of the week. We were very happy to have the yellow jersey for six days because Docker was very fast in the sprint and Mathieu is not so fast. I try to make the sprint so he take only a few seconds.

"Tomorrow is a hard stage and Mathieu has good legs, so I hope he can take the jersey back," added Clerc.

Without any mountains sprints on the seventh stage, Germany's Chris. Meschenmoser (Team Ista) will lead the classification into tomorrow's second and final King of the Mountains climb. Korea's Baek Sung Park (Seoul Cycling) also continues his lead in the Asian riders classification.

How it unfolded

Overcast, threatening skies greeted the remaining 136 riders at this morning's 9.00 AM departure from Kuala Rompin on Malaysia's western seaboard. The early start allowed today's stage to finish before Friday prayers - an obligatory practice for male Muslims which begins just after noon.

As a cool breeze blew in off the South China Sea, the peloton headed due north to Kuantan on its final coastal journey before ducking inland tomorrow. Two riders didn't take the start: Italian Massimiliano Maisto (NGC Medical) and Simon Clarke (SouthAustralia.com-AIS), the Aussie not recovered from lower back injuries sustained in a spectacular crash on Stage 5.

Despite the early departure, there was no time for sleepy heads in the peloton as attacks raged left, right and centre from the word 'GO!'. As usual it was the Asian riders featuring frequently in ones, twos and threes, but nothing was going anywhere before the first sprint at 24.3 kilometres.

At 126.2 kilometres and flat as the proverbial pancake, Stage 7 was the last realistic chance for second-placed Mitch Docker (Drapac Porsche) to overhaul maillot jaune Matthieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom) before the road heads skywards tomorrow. The red army of Drapac riders gave their all to bring Docker to the front at sprint one, but the youngster could only manage third behind Anuar Manan (Letua Cycling Team) and green jersey Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom), giving him a one second bonus to tie for the lead.

Sprick was now forced to contest the second sprint at 44.2 kilometres and hope that Clerc could also take points from the Australian. But Docker made no mistake this time, his second behind Clerc plus the two-second bonus making him maillot jaune virtuel with one sprint plus the finish remaining. Neither man figured in the third contest and with Drapac Porsche marshalling the peloton it was all down to the five kilometre drag strip finale into Kuantan.

But not before Koji Fukushima (Meitan Hompo) launched his customary kamikaze more in the final 30 kilometres. At 10 to go, Koji still had 49 seconds - enough to give the expectant crowd some hope of an Asian victory. At six kilometres it was down to 32 seconds, but three kilometres later the perennial attacker was gobbled up and it was eyes down for another bunch brawl.

And what a brawl it was. Argentine Mauro Richeze (CSF Group Navigare) careering across the finishing straight to cause a spectacular pile-up that brought down Alberto Loddo (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Danilo Hondo (Serramenti PVC) and Nolan Hoffman (South Africa National Team). In the ensuing chaos, Alexandre Usov (AG2R La Mondiale) snaked through the carnage for a cheeky stage win ahead of Mizan Hassan Maleki (Islamic Azad University) and Takashi Miazawa (Meitan Hompo).

Loddo was understandably furious with Richeze's tactics, gesticulating wildly as he walked over the line. The Italian's Tinkoff jersey cut to shreds after he slammed into the barriers. Hondo also came off badly with blood flowing freely from abrasions on his arms, legs and shoulder. Post-race replays showed Richeze riding straight over the German's head.

Docker successfully avoided the mêlée to become the first non-Frenchman to wear the Langkawi leader's jersey in 17 stages, after Anthony Charteau's long stint last year. Tomorrow's climb to Fraser Hill is something of an unknown, but appears steep enough to seriously re-shape the general classification and Docker's days in yellow could well be numbered.
