13th Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 7-17, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Stage 9 - February 17: Kuala Lumpur Criterium, 80.4 kmRicheze takes clean, commanding victoryRuslan confirmed as Langkawi victorBy Greg Johnson & Ben Abrahams in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia After being relegated and fined for causing a sprint finish collision just two days ago, Mauro Abel Richeze (CSF Group-Navigare) cleared his name with a clean and commanding bunch sprint victory in the race finale. Richeze simply out-paced his rivals on the 80.4-kilometre stage, with the group finish ensuring Moldavian Ruslan Ivanov (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) claimed the overall classification. "My win today has mostly brought my team what it deserved having worked hard," said Richeze. "The other day it was not my intention at all to make anybody crash. I felt very sorry for the guys who crashed and I felt sorry for our team's jersey." Mauro's victory sees the Argentinean join his brother, Maximiliano, on the list of stage winners at the Malaysian race. Maximiliano won the second stage of last year's race while riding for the same outfit, then called Ceramica Panaria - Navigare. "Today it was not a very hard job for me because my team worked a lot and just let me sprint," he explained. Ivanov entered the final stage with a 29 second margin over former yellow jersey Matthieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom), but the Frenchman's team was satisfied with the points jersey worn by Swiss rider Aurélien Clerc, with the French ProTour squad not attempting to steal back time with bonuses offered on the stage. The Venezuelan Serramenti PVC squad controlled the peloton throughout the race, with the entire squad controlling the breakaway's gap from the front of the peloton. Despite showing their strength on the stage, star sprinter Danilo Hondo didn't contend for the stage victory, with the German still bruised and battered after being caught up in the crash caused by Richeze on Friday. "I was more happy yesterday than I was today when I crossed the line," admitted Ivanov, indicating today's stage was just a formality. "I said it yesterday and I'll say it today; I'm here because of Gianni Savio and Marco Bellini, who have given me the possibility of going back to a big team, that's why the team deserves the victory as much as I do today." The Tour de Langkawi has marked a special moment in Ivanov's career, with the former Moldavian road champion spending the past two years without a professional contract. Ivanov turned professional in 1998 with Brescialat but despite recording 16 victories over the years that have passed found himself without a team after 2005, until Savio offered to take the now 34 year-old on for this season. "It's impossible to describe the feeling I have now, but I hope that this result is the start of a new career for me," he said. "It gives me confidence for looking ahead. I want to repay the team later this year as I have done here at the Tour de Langkawi." Despite being elated after taking a comeback victory, Rusland said there would be little time for celebration as the season has only just started. "There will be a little celebration with the team, maybe," he said. "In the next two or three days we will be heading back to Europe so there's not much time for celebration - the life of a bike rider goes on." Rusland's Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli team also wrapped up the team's classification on today's stage. The Asian team title went to Seoul Cycling, whose Jae Won Lee took a sensational victory on Stage 3 of this year's event. After being all but decided on yesterday's stage, the final three jerseys went unchanged on today's stage. After winning the queen stage yesterday, Italian Filippo Savini (CSF Group Navigare) takes home the mountains jersey, while Swiss rider Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom) took the points classification win and Japan's Shinichi Fukushima (Meitan Hompo - GDR), after many attempts at previous editions, claimed his first Asian rider classification title at the Malaysian race. How it unfoldedOn a stinking hot Sunday afternoon in downtown KL, the 131 survivors of Le Tour de Langkawi 2008 descended on Merdeka Square for the final 80.4 kilometres of this year's race. While threatening clouds hovered in the sky above, the torrential downpour some were predicting never materialised, and the riders left the start bang-on schedule at 15.30 local time. Three men were absent from the sign-in sheet today: Maxine Mederel (Crédit Agricole), Miyataka Shimizu (Meitain Hompo) and Budi Santoso (Polygon Sweet Nice). Twelve laps of a 6.7-kilometre anti-clockwise loop were on the menu this afternoon, and with no neutral section to negotiate attacks came thick and fast the second the flag was dropped. Nothing was going anywhere early doors, though, as Ruslan Ivanov's Serramenti boys had the job well in hand. Employing their full complement of six riders, the Italian Pro Continental Squad let sprinter Danilo Hondo cover Ivanov's wheel, as the four others swapped through and off at 50 km/h. Just like that. Ever popular Koji Fukushima (Meitan Hompo) was up to his usual tricks, dragging a group of eight clear on lap three. However, with no real organisation amongst the leaders, 10 seconds were all they were getting. It wasn't until lap five that a serious move was launched: Rony Martias (Bouygues Telecom), Nico Keinath (Team Ista), Yukiya Arashiro (Meitan Hompo), Mohd Sayuti Zahit (Letua Cycling Team), Sung Baek Park (Seoul Cycling), Wang Yip Tang (Hong Kong), Wesley Sulzberger (SouthAustralia.com-AIS) and Gene Bates (Drapac Porsche) quickly gaining 20 seconds. Serramenti now had some help from their Italian friends CSF Group Navigare and NGC Medical as the break reached its maximum advantage of 51 seconds with five laps remaining. From there onwards it was all one way traffic with many riders finding the peloton's speed simply too fast, leaving them no option but to cruise the final few laps at 'tourist pace'. As the break's lead dropped below 15 seconds, all but three of the escapees gave up the fight. Sulzberger, Arashiro and Park were still out there, but their defiance was purely symbolic and they were swept up with one lap remaining. In the absence of Tinkoff sprinter Alberto Loddo, all eyes were on Hondo for this second Langkawi victory. But the German was perhaps a little apprehensive after his monster crash on Friday. Instead it was the Stage 7 villain Mauro Richeze (CSF Group Navigare) who timed his move to perfection, coming home ahead of a fast finishing Jeremy Hunt (Crédit Agricole) and Enrico Rossi (NGC Medical). Crossing the line in 48th position was the delighted face of Ruslan Ivanov. The Serramenti man couldn't even get a contract two years ago, and now finds himself winner of Malaysia's most prestigious bike race. How the tide can turn in professional cycling. All that remained was the podium pleasantries and for the ninth and final time Tina was on hand as 'Simply the Best' boomed out across downtown KL. See you next year...
