13th Tour de Langkawi - 2.HCMalaysia, February 7-17, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - February 14: Bandar Penawar - Kuala Rompin, 182.8 kmKing of Genting makes his mark on the flatLeaders maintain status quo as queen stage nearsBy Ben Abrahams & Greg Johnson in Kuala Rompin, Malaysia When the organising committee of Le Tour de Langkawi removed Malaysia's most infamous ascent from this year's route, it seemed that José Serpa had lost his one chance for a stage victory. After all, the Colombian climber had won twice before at Genting Highlands, and would have been the outright favourite had the race returned for a third time. But hailing from the flats of Colombia's northern coast, Serpa still knows how to finish off a sprint and proved it today by outfoxing a 16-man breakaway for his fourth Langkawi stage victory. Today's technical finish - a sharp right at 600 metres followed by a similarly acute left 300 metres from the line - was always going to favour forward planning. Knowledge of the finale in advance a huge advantage. Fortunately for Serpa, Serramenti team manager Gianni Savio had done his homework, and when the 28 year-old rounded the final corner comfortably in front, he was untouchable from there onwards. Belarussian Alexandre Usov (Ag2R La Mondiale) and Aussie Johnnie Walker (SouthAustralia.com-AIS) having to settle for the minor placings. "Gianni interprets the race very well, he and [directeur sportif] Marco Bellini, that's the secret behind the team's success," Serpa explained post-race. "They have a good look at the route and form an idea of the way to ride it and then we interpret it when the moment comes." Rarely shy in the presence of a microphone, Savio himself was on hand to provide his take on the day's events. "Never, in 24 years as a sport director have I seen, in one race, a rider as good as José," said the flamboyant Italian. "He was perfect... in the best book of cycling." With the tour's queen stage to Bukit Fraser on Saturday, Serpa could well double his stage tally by the summit finish. But was he disappointed that his team allowed him to slip out of contention after day one? "Obviously it's very difficult to control a race when there are 25 teams and 150 riders," he said diplomatically, referring to the 19-man break that gained over 20 minutes. "The first stage was pretty complicated and didn't go quite as I'd have liked, but I think I've made up for it with a stage win and I'll continue doing a professional job." Yellow jersey Matthieu Sprick (Bouygues Telecom) maintained a slender one-second advantage over 21 year-old Mitch Docker (Drapac Porsche) after neither man contested the day's first intermediate sprint at 23 kilometres. The Frenchman dismissed suggestions that holding the race lead by such a small margin has made his days more stressful, and seems as ready as he'll ever be to face the Fraser Hill ascent in two day's time. "I wouldn't say the yellow jersey gives big stress; it gives focus," said Sprick. "This yellow jersey helps me to stay focused in the race. Since the goal is to win GC, it's better to be one second ahead than one second behind. The feeling in my legs now is just the normal fatigue from six days of racing and I think they'll continue as they are now." Bouygues Telecom team-mate Aurlien Clerc kept the green jersey, slightly extending his lead over Malaysian Anwar Manan (Letua Cycling) by taking second in the first sprint. The Swiss sprinter already has some solid racing in his legs this season, having finished the Tour Down Under, and barring crashes looks a safe bet to rap up the points competition. "With the heat it's OK because I was already in Australia," noted Clerc. "But it's very fast every day because we are 25 teams and only six riders on the team. The race is very different to a race in Europe because it's impossible to control the race all day with only six riders. It's always nervous. I knew that it was a hard race, but I didn't know it would be so fast at the beginning of each stage." The tour's King of the Mountains competition also got going today, but with a fairly inauspicious start it must be said. A category four rated climb was on the menu at 75.9 kilometres, but it proved more molehill than mountain - being just 600 metres long with a very mellow gradient. Team Ista's Chris Meschenmoser was the winner, the German looking understandably perplexed during the press conference when asked about its difficulty. "It was a good possibility to win a jersey in that way," he admitted. "The course went a little bit up so it was at first hard to be in the group. When I had to go, I concentrated on the sprint." Seoul Cycling continued its stellar tour when Baek Sung Park took the first intermediate sprint and propelled himself into the Asian rider's jersey courtesy of a three-second time bonus. The Korean Continental team has struggled to find sponsorship this season, having to buy much of their own equipment, but if Park can keep Shinichi Fukushima (Meitan Hompo) at bay for two more days it will be a much needed boost for the squad. How it unfoldedSome 141 riders took to the start of today's Stage 6 in Bandar Penawar, with the startline situated next to the Cabaran Eco Paintball centre. While the children ran around shooting one another with multi-coloured balls, thousands of other locals were out to watch the riders depart under threatening skies. Flamboyant rider Koji Fukushima (Meitan Hompo - GDR) set the mood at the start by playing the harmonica to the crowd. With all eyes on Fukushima the Japanese rider didn't disappoint in the opening kilometres by going up the road with M. Firdaus Daud (Malaysian National Team). The Asian duo took a 48 second lead out over the peloton, however a chase bunch of four sought to end the early attack. A split in the peloton occurred as the pursuit of the pair increased at kilometre 3.8, with the two's lead out to 1'08. The split saw the duo's lead quickly brought back, before a new group of 17 riders broke away as the others fell back to the peloton. The group included Ramon Troncoso (Karpin Galicia), Ruslan Ivanov (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli), Jorg Lehmann (Team Ista), Cédric Pineau (AG2r - La Mondiale), Stef Clement (Bouygues Telecom), Joseph Chapman (New Zealand National Team), Nico Keinath (Team Ista), Matteo Priamo (CSF Group Navigare), Mehdi Sohrabi (Islamic Azad Univercity Cycling Team), Matt Wilson (Team Type 1 ), Mohd Sayuti Zahit (Letua Cycling Team), Mohd Razak Abd (Malaysia National Team), Anuar Manan (Letua Cycling Team), Marco Corsini (NGC Medical - OTC Industria Porte), Fuyu Li (Trek - Marco Polo Cycling Team), Hyeon Gu Kim (Seoul Cycling) and Stuart Shaw (Drapac Porsche Developement Program). By kilometre 11 the lead group had amassed a 50 second lead, but that's as far as the bunch would get. Riders in the peloton began drawing the lead back in and just after Robbie Williams (Drapac-Porsche) became the first casualty of the day in a crash, the break was nuturalised at kilometre 20. The peloton only came together long enough for Sung Baek Park (Seoul Cycling) to win the first sprint from classification leader Aurlien Clerc (Bouygues Telecom) and Matthew Wilson (Team Type 1) before the day's defining break went away. As the race reached kilometre 26 a group of 16 broke away and despite being an unorganized assault, the group quickly drew a margin over the peloton. The group consisted of David George (South African National Team), Dennis van Niekerk (South African National Team), Chris. Meschenmoser (Team Ista), Peter McDonald (Drapac Porsche Developement Program), Hyeon Gu Kim (Seoul Cycling), Jose Perez Serpa (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli), Johnnie Walker (South Australia.com - AIS), Alexandre Usov (AG2r - La Mondiale), Pavel Brutt (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Jeremy Hunt (Crédit Agricole), Simon Clarke (South Australia.com - AIS), Marco Corsini (NGC Medical - OTC Industria Porte), Enrico Rossi (NGC Medical - OTC Industria Porte), Rony Martias (Bouygues Telecom), Johann Tschopp (Bouygues Telecom) and Sea Loh Keong (Trek - Marco Polo Cycling Team). Meitan Hompo-GDR drove the peloton as the break's gap reached the one minute mark. As the gap extended to 1'30 in the palm tree plantations Herwin Jaya (Polygon Sweet Nice) launched a solo chase, but despite claiming back 58 seconds the Indonesian fell back into the peloton. The Malaysian National team and Polygon Sweet Nice continued to send riders after the bunch for the following 10 kilometres, but both squads failed to make in-roads. As the final counterattack fell by the wayside, the peloton's lead had surpassed five minutes. Chris Meschenmoser (Team ISTA) claimed the race's first King of the Mountains points on a 200 metre, erm, rise, from Johnnie Walker (SouthAustralia.com-AIS) and Dennis Van Niekerk (South Africa). The break's lead expanded out to a maximum advantage of 9'19, before the peloton reacted at the 100 kilometre mark with the aim of bringing the bunch back for a sprint finish. The lead margin was brought back to 6'26 as Alexandre Usov (AG2R La Mondiale) and Peter McDonald (Drapac-Porsche) won the final two intermediate sprints of the 182.2 kilometre stage. As the race reached the 150 kilometre mark David George (South Africa) attacked his break-away rivals in the hope of a run-away stage victory. While the South African's hopes were quickly dashed, the leader's margin had drawn back out to 7'22 with 25 kilometres remaining as a result of the increased pace. The expansion of the front group's lead put a bunch sprint out of the picture. It also meant riders wouldn't face a traffic jam in the hard right, followed by a hard left before the 300 metre sprint home. Despite several sprinters having a presence in the break, it was Colombian climber Jose Serpa (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni-Androni Giocattoli) comfortably sprinted to victory. Serpa cruised home a bike length ahead of Alexandre Usov (AG2r - La Mondiale) while SouthAustralia.com-AIS duo Johnnie Walker and Simon Clarke taking third and fourth. Clarke's fourth place finish after a day in the break marked an impressive turn of fortune for the Australian. On Wednesday's Stage 5 Clarke hit a pot hole in the final three kilometres, putting the rider into a summersault that concluded in a road-side concrete drain while the rider's Teschner was sitting up in tree branches. The sprint finish was too hot for local rider Sea Loh Keong (Trek - Marco Polo Cycling Team), who finished seven seconds down on his 15 breakaway companions. The main bunch rolled in 4'28 minutes down on the leaders while yesterday's stage winner Alberto Loddo (Tinkoff Credit Systems) was the second last rider home, some 6'34 behind.
